The Mrs. came to me today and suggested some security lighting around the house. I was thinking solar LED lights with motion sensors and wanted some thoughts on what to get. Is this the best way to go? Would I be better off with wired lights? We were thinking of placing 2 on the house and one on the pole to illuminate the cars when we come in at night. Here is a pic of the house. Ideas? Suggestions?

I placed one on the front of my home recently that is an LED... Seems to work fine... it runs off of a 6 volt battery and is dimmer then I expected but more the adequate for my needs. It is duel purpose since I hate "booger" lights, but did want some light when I drive up or if someone wanders up, even if the electricity was out. It is motion activated and no actual hard wiring was needed. Took me all of 5 minutes to install... actually took longer to get ready then do... I would get at least one solar LED and put on the pole to see if they provide sufficient light for your needs....

With that tree line, someone could come out of hiding and be on you before you could do much about it. Suggest either wired motion sensors inside the tree line or similar device. Its too late if they trip that kind of light connected to the house.

Your very right Cwi, some thing to think about. We also have a lot of animals that come and go. We are bordered on 3 sides by swamp and are a highway for deer, coyote, fox and you name it. I have to try to balance between security and a light tripping 15 times a night because of the critters.

We ended up going with some Lowes specials. They are plenty bright enough for what we need and affordable at 60 bucks or so a pop. Thanks for the advice guys

*UPDATE*
These things absolutely suck!
When they work they are awesome, but after 2 months of operation they have failed. About a month ago they started coming on at their own free will. I tried adjusting the range in hopes they were just too sensitive but it did no good. After about a week of that they started coming on at sundown and staying on until their batteries died. I turned them off for a week to get a good charge and upon turning them back on the same thing happened.
Oh well, it was a nice thought.

We too bought LED motion security light for whole place and pole barn.
Well 1 year into it and YES they are great re motion security lights but I cannot just turn them on when I want to. They are set up to come on either as motion detectors after dusk OR you can hold the switch 10 seconds and turn them on say, for being out in the yard at night to do something. Drives me nuts.
We have an electrician who is coming to hopefully fix this. Home Depot double security lights LED hard wired about $20

I agree it's a pain. I have motion lights on the garage and on and in the carport. I also had a hardwired light placed in carport so I could see without having to use a motion light with an outlet right next to the switch. Very helpful.

I have four floodlights, one on each corner of my house. I was thinking of replacing them with motion lights. The dang things all have burnt out lights and I need a long extension ladder to replace them. Under my house I have two fluorescent fixtures which also need replacing. Not sure what I'll put in their places. Living so high off the ground does present its problems.
