Been looking for a 357 revolver. Found a S&W 66 at the pawn shop for 350.00. Worth it if in decent condition?
And, it's a -1 and marked Minn. State Trouper.

I say yes.. probably a 4"bbl, and a commemorative. If it's clean it's a good deal I think.. Besides.. a S&W 66?.. heck yeah.. if you don't like it after you buy call me..

Well known, solid wheel gun. If you shoot a lot of .357 mag in lieu of .38 special, stick with heavier loads of 158gr or more to avoid flame cutting of the back strap. This is NOT an issue unless you shoot a lot.

Have to agree with TW and Marc. The Model 66 was a largely used wheel gun by LE in the 70s and 80s. They were pretty much used until autos started making inroads.
It is pretty much a SS, heavy under lug, version of the model 15 Combat Masterpiece, IIRC.
If not too much looseness in the cylinder it's a go for sure.

Well I lost the deal. Another feller had a hold on it and seems as if he bought it. I'm still gonna check again cause Bryan said he'd hold it for me if the other guy backed out. Oh well.

Good deal, If you can't swing the 66 look for a Md 19 (also known as the combat Magnum)Same as the 66 just blue steel, the Md 28 (known as the Highway Patrolman) or a Md 27 a presentation grade (checkerd top strap, nicer grips and a HIGH polish) of the 28. Should all go in the 350 to 500 market according to your area.

If ya ever get the chance, try to lay hands on a 686. Very nice piece. I had 4" one several years ago and sold it. Wish now I hadn't. They are shooters!

The 66-1 is highly desirable. It has a Pinned Barrel and recessed cylinders. It's probably a State Trooper trade in.
If it looks nice, it's worth every bit of $350.
It will take 38 Special loads by the 5 gallon bucket full. If you shoot Full power 357s will wear it out and cut the topstrap like previously stated.
The duty carry load was a 125 grain Federal hollow point flying just under 1400 FPS. Remington 125 grain HP is also a barn burner defense load.
Awesome Revolver!

I missed the deal on the .357 but got a boat load of 125 gr Remington SJHP lead so I'm still looking for something besides my carbine to shoot. May try some loads with 231 or HS-6.
