The thread about the Model 66 got me to thinking about a discussion I had not long ago regarding revolvers vs autos. In a day and age when semi-autos are at the forefront of hand gun popularity, why even bother with the "antiquated" technology of a double action six shooter? Today's semi's are dependable, high capacity, easily reloaded, accurate, and durable. Of course, there are is some lower end junk but, most of the better made ones (Glocks, Sigs, S/W, Springfields, etc) are as reliable as the day is long. So, if I can have double or triple the amount of rounds in the fight, why not poo-poo revolvers altogether? What follows is a few of my thoughts on the subject of why its important to recognize revolvers for the deadly instruments they are. Not meant to be all inclusive and all knowing, just a few random thoughts on why revolvers deserve respect too from a guy with a little time to kill today
1) Revolvers make bullets go down range too; If you were in a confrontation and the attacker pulled out a revolver to use against you, would you dismiss the threat just because you have 15 rounds in your Glock? Of course not! If the situation is reversed, would you think the fight was over because you only had six shooter? Being on the receiving end of a revolver is not somehow more comforting than an auto.
2) They can be quite accurate; there are not alot of 6" - 8" semi autos out there. True not all revolvers are cannon length but, there are some hog legs out there. A wheel gun shot on single action can have a very crisp light trigger pull allowing for very accurate shooting at longer ranges.
3) Desert Eagles aside, revolvers often pack a bigger wallop. 357, 38+p, 41 mag, 44 mag, 454 Casull, 500 SW...you get the point. A model 29 with a 8+ inch bbl will reach out a good long way. You just dont generally see that kind of boom coming out of a typical semi auto.
4) Revolvers are not slow - necessarily. The following video shows what can be accomplished with one in the hands of a pro:

Now granted, that is the great Jerry Miculek but, the point is what the gun itself is capable of.
Im not trying to champion the revolver as the superior weapon. There are detractions of course from using a revolver such as 5-6 shot capacity, slow reloads, and usually heavier than their semi auto cousins. I just wanted to bring up that revolvers have a place and even if you choose differently, revolvers still deserve respect for the power they do have and should never be under estimated in a fight. A fact Im certain is not lost on my brethren here at CC Mamma's.
