I don't know where that hardness (Rockwell) number lies, but experimenting with what you have is (IMO) the way to go. Depending on the rocks available to you, your steel hardness that is most effective will vary. Thanks crash, all I know is my striker seems to be less effective then others iv'e seen on youtube. I took an old rat tail file and heated it so I could bend it, it does work but not that good. Remember the metal is the part throwing the sparks and is not the 'striker'. The harder striker is what knocks of the iron, not the other way around.

the title is "survival myths that will get you killed".
The premise or intent of the statement is correct, but the literal interpretation is wrong as we have seen.
The important lesson here is "being told/shown how to do something or knowing of a method to do something, doesn't give you the skill to do it".
Over and over, again and again we read that it is your survival skills that will keep you alive and that knowledge is your best tool.
What this OP proves is KNOWLEDGE DOES NOT EQUAL SKILL"
This forum has people whose survival skills range from 0 to 10. It also has people whose knowledge of survival skills that range from 0 to 10.
To know or have knowledge that there are "14" different ways to make fire does not mean the know er can make fire in "14" ways.
If you know there are "14" was to make fire you would be considered a 10 on fire making knowledge. If you can make fire, have the skill to make fire, using "3" of the "14" ways, you might be considered a "5" on fire making skills.
I carry 3 different and independent ways to make fire with me at all times. I know of, have knowledge of additional ways to make fire, but I know I have the skill to create fire using my three ways.
The only myth in this post is that knowing something does not make you skilled in it.
Survival knowledge will get you killed if you do not have the skill to practice/use the knowledge.
Don't expect to make fire without fire making skills. Don't expect to have water from a solar still, with out having the skill to create a solar still. Don't expect to make use of all of the possibilities of using para cord you have heard about without having the skill to do it.
Knowledge without skill, will get you killed.
