Buy one of these from HD. Make sure it's the LED (3) not the old incandescent bulb. $4.95 Buy from Radio Shack or elsewhere a pack of 150 ohm resistors (usually 5 per card for $1.50)
Soldier the resistor in the light in the following manner. This should yield light for ~2000 hrs. Even w/o the resistor the runtime for the flashlight is 130 hrs. That's 5.5 hrs per day for almost a month. The 6 volt battery will store for about 6 years. Will reduce lumens by about 50% but there's still plenty of light to wash the dishes, milk the cows, slop the hogs, or dress a deer.

Not sure if this still is true but in the past I have opened a Duracell 6 volt lantern battery and found 4 D size batteries which worked for regular style flashlights if you needed them. The Energizers and most others were not built the same way.
