Thanks for the link, just ordered one. Make sure you flush it out first before drinking from it. None of the reviews i seen mentioned this. I think this is the one I'm going to stick with myself.

I don't care for the life straw only because you can't fill a canteen with it, am I right? If i'm right then you can get a drink but you can't take any water with you. I don't have one so let me know if that is a true statement. You never know when that next water source will show up so you must be able to fill your water bottles.

Once you fill a canteen or Nalgene bottle you can drink the water through the Life Straw from what I've seen. I have not opened and tried one yet, they came in sealed package which extends the shelf life.

Actually I'm thinking in a different vein. If the only water you find is a tiny trickle, not enough to be able to fill a container, then I would think being able to drink from that trickle with a straw would be quite helpful. Good points to having both I reckon as it covers your bases.. and yes OT.. you fill the dirty water in your dirty water container, use your straw and drink the water but don't swallow, then spit it into your teapot... clean recycled water.. every democrats dream

If the life straw came with another cap and shorter tube you could turn the bottle upside down and let the gravity pull the water through the straw into a clean bottle. As for the trickle, just use a cloth...not the one you blew your nose in, and use that to fill your bottle by ringing it out into your bottle. Yes it will take a while but it will work.

I have filled my canteen a few times with questionable water to be boiled later in the canteen cup. When I get home I just fill it with water add 6 drops of bleach, leave the cap a little loose so the threads get treated as well, shake over sink to mix everything together and let sit for a hour or so. Seems to work just fine for sanitizing the canteen again.
Been kicking around the idea of putting a small drop bottle similar to the kind eye drops come in my canteen cover, most covers come with a small pouch for tablets. Anyway filling the bottle with bleach to treat my canteen with. Course the bleach would be less than 6 months old. Like to save my filters for real emergency's.

I did that.. went to a pharmacy for eye drop bottle.. it was harder to find than I thought, but I live near a small town so that could have been a factor but shouldn't be. Anyway, filled it with bleach, wrote the instructions on it, put it in a Ziploc (cause just imagine that leak..) but the pocket on a canteen cover would be the ideal spot.. good idea.. Read somewhere to use a 'paint pen' as even a sharpie wears off after awhile (I've never seen a paint pen so can't describe it to you). One would think it is shaped like a pen and contains 'paint'. lol

For a lot of us two of those mini would last a life time. Make sure to prefilter and keep it from freezing.
