For those like me who are into the history of certain firearms here are some links directly from the manufacturers (and other sites that tend to line up) regarding serial number manufacturing dates. Ex. found out my Defenders were born in 1983 and 1985.

Winchester serial numbers
Colt link (you need to put in the serial # and let them look it up for you)
M1 Garands (Springfield Armory and Winchesters)

Never owned any 870s so I cannot say whether this one is a good one or not, but here you go anyway. Remington 870

I checked out the Remington 870 site and it appears to be good. At least it was for my old 870 that was born in March 1965. The serial number/year matched up with my paperwork. Thanks again Jim
