Anyone here have any experience with Ruger's mini 30? Thinking of getting one in the near future. Size wise would be great for the woods I roam in. I know a lot of guys like the mini 14. Seems like the 30 would have a little more knockdown power.

I've always been interested in that gun. I just have never been able to justify buying one since the SKS is so much cheaper, and more rugged and reliable from what I've read. But it looks a lot prettier than the SKS, and feels better, in my opinion.

I do like the sks as well. Prices on them seem to be going up though. Also through a friend of mine I can get a discount on new guns. Although every gun we tried to look up last week was sold out. Surely the upcoming election wouldn't have anything to do with that.... Hmmm

I just realized that auto correct changed ruger to river in the title. Lol. Oops

The ruger is a good firearm, but there is one distinct advantage to the AK/SKS lines. Both of the former are typically hard chromed bores designed for steel case corrosive ammo.
For that particular round, the odds of coming across steel case ammo are very high. I'd have to go with the AK/SKS for that reason.

The WASR 10 (Romanian AK clone) is a great 7.62x39 rifle. My dad has one that we ran for hundreds (maybe into a thousand) of rounds before we cleaned it. It was very very dirty but never hiccuped. Magazines will be much cheaper as well, about $13 for a almost AK 30 rounder vs about $29 for a factory Mini-30 20 rounder. AKs also have the option of mags from 5 rounds up to 75 round drums. There is a lot more aftermarket parts for the AK as well.

LOL, I feel like you asked a question about a gun, and then got bombarded with alternatives instead of answers... I wish I had more experience with it and could give you some better input.

LOL, I feel like you asked a question about a gun, and then got bombarded with alternatives instead of answers... Yup, just another case of "I know nothing about what your asking but here's something similar that has worked for me" or IKNAWYABHSSTHWFM ;D ;D ;D

Oh I dont mind helpful suggestions. It's those that come in bashing the op and have nothing useful to say that bother me. To be honest I completely forgot about the ak and sks platforms. Not really much of a gun guy. I can shoot one and hit what I want, just don't really know to much about all the different types.

Having had two mine 30s, I like them, but.....they only like commercial ammo and not steel case if you want any accuracy out of them. Even then they are not too impressive. I killed a deer or two with them but eventually sold them some time back. For what they cost now, I would go with a good quality AK. Second would be an SKS Also mags and extra parts are much more expensive and hard to come by at times for Ruger. In shtf you won't find much for minis.
