Well! Tonight I decided to count my ammo, just so I had an idea. Holy crap, I hope my wife doesn't find out what the numbers are.

Know what you mean.....kinda....
DGF was putting something up for me in the closet. That's where my gun safe and ammo storage is.
Her only question was, well you think you have enough bullets?
Simple answer. Nope.

I don't have an impressive amount of ammo, but what I do have is distributed. After helping neighbors sift through melted guns/ammo in their expensive "fire proof" safes, I learned some lessons.
Lately I've been reemphasizing my supply of 12ga. Having a variety of slug types and shot sizes provides an extremely versatile set of tools to work with. They can also serve as an emergency supply for those who cast and reload bullets.
Go ahead and laugh, but I recently bought another spam can of 7.62x54r because it was $40. Just about everyone around here has a short Mosin M44 and a spam can or two sitting in a closet. I recently shot some of my Bulgarian brass cased rounds from 1955 - no I'm not kidding, it's almost as old as me! I have fired over 200 rounds of it without one failure and I still have about 240 rounds of it left.

I will do an inventory once in awhile but that's just to give me an idea.. I try not to focus on how much (or little) I have and continue to buy a box or two or three when I can find it. I vary the calibers I buy from one time to the other. I've been doing this for the last 4-5 years and have managed to build up a decent supply.. certainly nothing in comparison to some on here I'm sure.. but as Will said on that last debacle of a forum where we all met originally.. 'if you're in a firefight and there are over 300 rounds fired by you, what do you think your chances are of coming out of it alive?' The other saying is 'the best way to die is with a smile on your face sitting in a pile of empty casings'. Disclaimer.. I always buy these various calibers for my neighbors.. I only have the single action RG .22 revolver with the plastic grips.. And don't laugh at it.. it's not a Saturday Night Special.. It is a Sunday Morning Diva

Wow! You own a gun??!! I only own ammo in hopes of getting a gun like yours someday.
After the forest fire, the escaped marauding circus monkeys from TN, and the unfortunate offshore boating incident.....I just don't have a gun anymore. That's OK, the government will take care of me.

We had a post on here before but like everything else I can't find it.
You can take any size shot shell with and size shot and make an effective slug.
One way cut through the plastic above the wad most of the way around. When the shell is fired the plastic will break and the whole thing will punch through plywood.
Method two is to cut the top off and dump out the shot any size, mix the shot with melted wax, like a candle or crayon and pour it back into the shell before it cools, you are not melting the shot, just mixing it with hot wax. Not only does it make a good slug, you can see it travel because of the color. I'm sure you could mold ball bearings or nails or nuts or anything else and have a nice solid block to hit the target with a harder punch.
So don't feel limited using a shotgun for defense when you only have #9 or bird shot.

Woody, The old "cut shell" slug idea is great for old "heavy barrel" guns that can handle it, I have done it many times for over 30 years. But: Take the shell that you are going to cut and try pushing it down the barrel from the crown. THAT is the amount of compression and pressure buildup that your gun will see from breech to crown. Item: IK-217616 I buy Rio 2-3/4" 00 Buck and like them a lot. Standard 9 pellets rated 1345 fps for about half the price of other full powered rounds. I may be missing something, but that's the only 00 that I've been buying for last few months. I don't have a chronometer, but an awful lot folks out there are reporting very close to the advertised velocity. I have not tried their low recoil rounds, because I like a good kick At any given time, I can generally find someone selling them for $0.45 to $0.50 per round. On sale, $8.99 per box of 25. Marc

I don't buy RIO because they don't stand up very well to environmental testing. By that I mean exposure to moister, temperature extremes etc. If your in a fairly stable area, it won't be much of a problem, but here it is a problem.

Interesting observation. Visually the shells appear as robust and tightly sealed as the others that I've used. All of my ammo is kept cool and dry, but that could obviously change in a heartbeat, so that is an important issue.
I'll have to look into that, thanks!
