When it comes to using your E.D.C. blades how do you define hard use Vs. abuse? I know what obvious abuse is; hitting the blade with a hammer on the tip, using it in sand, jumping up and down on it, running it over, etc. However, there is a point when normal hard use becomes abuse. What is that point to you?
Personally I like to lightly baton my folders. Some would call that abuse, others would call it hard use. Where is the line for you?

It's a tool use it. If it breaks I need a better tool. My knife from crashblade found a home on my military kit. I've beat on it a fair amount.

My first Crashblade is in my Bob, my second is always on me or within arm's reach. The Becker is also in the Bob, ready for heavier work such as batoning. To me, the folders (e.g. in the Wave or my SAK) are for lighter duty. I don't really draw a line on their use, but I've advanced the line on the Wave given cwi's reviews.

Abuse; using a folder as a prybar, learned that the hard way many moons ago.
Hard use; Batoning a folder with a branch or split cordwood

I will not buy a pricey folding knife for edc.But I don't buy the cheapest either. Most of the time I loose one every few months. I guess you could say I abuse my pocket knife. It's used for cutting, scraping, a screwdriver, prying, a chisel or any other task I think it will do.

A Becker is my hard use go to, and it should be up to any task I give it, but I won't abuse it, except when not given any other chance. You could abuse a tank, if you wanted to.
But at the same time a Becker is not my EDC. EDC does not contain anything hard use, just functional.

It's all about the task for me. The crashblades are beyond stellar for cutting meat and gristle, the SAKs are useful as armorer tools when I can't bring my toolbox, the Gerber Suspension has adequate pliers for really basic tasks, etc.
For me abuse is at the line where you're using the blade for something it's clearly not designed for, and the end result is damage to the blade and/or whatever you're working on.

I figure as long as I take care of a tool it will take care of me. And in the end, if I have to break a knife off in a bears eye well, I just hope the knife understands.
