I know there is a difference between the two but old habits are hard to break so I still call lamp oil "kerosene". Over the years I have purchased small bottles of kerosene for my lamps at different times, so some is older than others and some bottles have coloring added to it. Ideally I'd like to combine all these small bottles into larger safe proof gasoline containers before the smaller plastic bottles start leaking. I couldn't find blue containers so I purchased the red ones, took a black Sharpie and wrote "kerosene" in large letters all over them and will store them separately from my gasoline containers. My questions are: Does that coloring added to the oil break down the oil in any way before I mix it in with the clear oil? Can "tiki torch oil" containing "citronella" be safe to burn in glass oil lamps?

I keep both 5 gallon containers as well as gallons of kerosene. The reason I store some gallon containers is for bartering. I keep lamp oil and kerosene seperate incase its used for other purposes than lighting and some lamp oils cantain high degrees of parafin which could glog orfices on kerosene heaters. If I'm not mistaken citronella and Tiki torch fuel should be burnt outdoors due to off gasses.

CL, I've used latern oil, lamp oil and skitter oil sucessfully in hurricane latrens. Kerosine was a different animal.
Big deal is wick trimming. Once you trim the wick to match the oil, its a moot point. Most require a rounded trim and others require various type of pointed wicks.
As I remember the small type wick for the small "railroad" type lanterns worked best in hurricane lamps with kerosine.
I've put back and continue to purchase 750 ltr bottles of regular lamp oil from WM. They also have 'cane lamps, wicks and wick holders that are pretty cheap. Now they are not super high quailty, but I used them on my old deck for over 6 years without anything more than new wicks.
One could spend $50-$75 on lamps, wicks and oil and have light for a good while.
Just 2 cents worth.
Jimmy

Thanks for dropping in guys and adding y'all 2 cents worth. I decided to add all clear lamp oils together. If they breakdown and won't light, I move to plan B. Skeeter oil with citronella and colored lamp oils will be placed in "smudge pots" to burn outside. Can't believe I opened a thread to help me figure this out.
