There are several brands and they are gaining a lot of traction in this part of the country.
Less operating cost.
Less installation cost.
No ductwork.
Heat and cool only the rooms you want.
Very good to retrofit with.
Very cool.

About 3k......but if you are handy you can install in about 4 hrs with a buddy and have a refrigeration guy do the start up. I have seen then on amazon &1500. I am heating a space that puts this unit in its upper limits on paper but Fujitsu is way under rated. 12deg. @ 4:00 am and the space stayed 70 deg. Very neat unit!

Questions/confusion. $3000 for that unit. Does it heat/cool your whole house or do you need additional units or sources? A central HVAC for 1200 sf can be done for between $5-6000. A window heat/AC unit can be had for $600 (x4.= $2400). I've seen the units like your talking and they're easy to install and compact. I'm just wondering about comparisons

I have a lot of customers who really like their mini-split heat pumps from Sanyo, and I assume that the other brands are fully equal or better.
One of the features that is great for off grid systems is the inverter controlled variable speed compressor. You can actually dial it in to pull no more than "x" amount of wattage to match your energy budget. So if can only spare 500 watts per hour for example, the system will only draw 500 watts per hour, even if it doesn't cool/heat the room to setpoint - it will so the best it can with the budget given.
Readily available kits for 9,000 BTU to 36,000 BTU can be purchased with a precharged line set for the DYI folks.

Those units are very common in other parts of the world. They are not typically over kill either.

Nice units....installed a lot of them as computer/machine room cooling. Good for one room mostly.......maybe not the most economical if you already have duct work and forces air. Really shine where duct work would be hard and expensive to do.
