Well, I caved in over the weekend, got a new toy to play with and to add to the collection...a Ruger Mini-30 Ranch Rifle (Cal. 7.62x39). Cant wait to take it out to the range and crank some rounds. Any members have one ?

I've got one with the wood stock - I think you're going to like it.

Dont own one but those i fired functioned flawlessly. Not a tack driver but a darn good deterrent

I love that saying 'not a tack driver'. I know it's indicative of accuracy but what do you really want the gun for? Driving tacks or deterring bad guys? Personally I've never been that accurate so I bought a hammer. I've never been that good at fisticuffs so bought a gun for deterrence (And mud this isn't aimed at you cause ive seen you drive tacks, sort of). Sorry just having a quirky morning.

Congrats - good move!
I have a friend whom I've watched consistently ringing steel with his stock Mini-Thirty at 200-250 yards, with open sights with factory ammo. He claims 300+ is doable in calm conditions and decent ammo, but I haven't seen it in person.
I hear a lot of stories about them being inaccurate, but his shoots a whole lot better than I can. I'm really looking forward to hearing what you think!

I can't help you one way or another 'cause as Schultz would say, "I know nothing, absolutely nothing" about this sharp-looking new toy, I'll bet it's fun to shoot though. Glad to see you pampering yourself.

And....how does it handle?

The thing I have determined is it will shoot good out of the box or it won't.
But if it does not there are two likely problems.
The way the barrel is held to the stock allows the whole assembly to pivot on the pin/screw that goes through the receiver and the magazine assembly. The front of the receiver is held down with a "C" clamp type device with screws on either side. Factory assembly is either too tight or too loose on the guns that don't shoot the same place twice.
The way to fix that is to take the clamp loose and slide a piece of paper between the barrel and the stock and tighten the clamp down just enough you can't pull the paper out. Then try to sight it in. If it won't hit the same place twice tighten the screws a 1/4 turn and try again. It is important to let the thing cool down between sessions. If it still won't settle down replace the paper with a piece of cardboard, not corrugated just a single piece and do it again. You have to count the screw revolutions so if you find the right spot you can recover it, you leave the paper or cardboard between the barrel and stock but trim it so it doesn't show.
Or if you wanted to do it you would bed the barrel in fiberglass to that thickness, but I don't think it is necessary for a carbine type rifle.
The second thing is the load, I have one that is great at 300 yards regardless of the load and one that won't hit anything twice without a hand load I worked up for the 7.62x39.
I used to demand my rifles to hit black on an Ace of spades at 100 yards, now it isn't any longer all the weapons fault but my eyes. Now I expect to hit a playing card at 100 yards and hit a 9 inch pie pan at 300. If I can do that these days, I am happy with the weapon. My eyes just won't do much past 300 yards any longer so I don't try.
I very much prefer the 7.62x39 to the 5.56/.223, but that's just me.
Hope this helps or better yet when you try it out it is doing a group you can live with.

Congrats.......You should have a good time with it.
Had a early 1976 model Mini 14....got it in a trade. Shot good cold, and no, I don't drive tacks with a firearm either....Hot barrel, 10 rounds or so. started walking off the bull.
Ended up trading it back to the guy I have got it from, he had traders remorse....
