Don't know if this for real....or if it would be practical if it did work....just thought it was an interesting idea.

Yes that works. Here are some more survival or emergency candles ideas:

About the Crisco thing... just a piece of string? Not a wick? I've never been able to get plain old string to burn like a wick with any success at all, and heck fire I've been experimenting with making candles for years and years. Plus which, as the wick/string burns down, wouldn't its flame be extinguished by the melted Crisco? That's what happens to very deep candles for me, if there isn't a way for the wax (or in this case, melted shortening) to channel away from the flame. On a related note, I like to put birthday or votive candles in small emergency kits. It makes sense to use one match and light a little candle, which will burn longer than a match, if you're trying to light a campfire. That way if the fire doesn't catch you still have a flame to use to try again without having to sacrifice another match.

One of the very first "survival books" I ever read was a small paperback series intended for campers. I could go get it, but the pertinent quote is very close to: "The point being, if you're going to rub 2 sticks together to light a fire, it is highly desirable that one of them be a match." Yes, the author had a slight sarcastic streak. The other pertinent quote is: "Matches are made for lighting candles." Ever since reading the little books, I've made sure I had easy access to a candle. Once "tea candles" became the vogue, it was so much easier to carry a candle, but I made do with all kinds.
CCM, try braiding the string... tightly. Yes, candle wax tends to extinguish the flame when it pools, so I pour it off into another container for future use. It's just part of being attentive to the candle. With kids and/or pets, open flames aren't something I abandon, even for a few seconds.

I have had the same problem with "string" instead of "Wick" and also the problem of drowning the flame....even in the big bug candles.
So I sure the is more to it than a simple "stick a piece of string into a can of Crisco"....
I carry birthday candles, even the trick ones that won't blow out, or votive/tea candles, or ends of the bees wax candles form my lanterns.

In with my waterproof matches and fire supplies I store trick birthday candles the ones you can't blow out. If its very windy or wet and I'm using matches I'll conserve them and light the candle with one match and save the rest.

I don't pack lightly, so I have old school safety flares for that reason. Marc

Well I guess I'll say it. I'd rather have the can of crisco to cook with than use as a candle

MMMMMMMMMM fried chicken in a cast iron pan, used to love eating the cracklings and loveed the chicken skin, okay, heck yes I still do. I know its not suppose to be good for you, but like everything, moderation. Frying chicken is the one dish I can't seem to get right, mom was always the best cook for that.
