I went to a Gander Mountain store for the first time today, because they opened one about an hour drive from me. I was passing by it on the way home so I stopped to look at ammo. The store seems very nice, but I can bet that their overhead will drive overall prices into the Cabela's/Bass Pro category. I suppose that the trick is to watch for promotional/sale prices.
I did see a couple of reasonable deals: - Floor stack of around (30-35) plastic ammo cans with (1600) rounds of CCI Stinger .22lr at $126.00 - Not quite as many of the same cans with (1600) CCI Mini-Mag .22lr for $119.00 - Bigger pile of Blazer .22lr for $25 per (500) round brick I had to be looking at more than 100,000 rounds. Purchases are limited to (1) box per family, per day - and people were not lined up. While you can better for Remington/Winchester/Federal - those prices are about right for Stingers and Mini-Mags.
Their Federal 5.56/62gr green tip in steel ammo cans of (350) rounds for $199 was not enough to get my attention.
I did spend a few bucks on Federal American Eagle .223/55gr in (100) round bulk packs for $32.00 each - no limit........
I really do think that the "average American ammo buyer" is getting close to being stocked up.

At least they had .22 ammo. Not happening here and they could have been overstocked for opening. Hope all the pristine cases were available for your friend. Lol

Good to hear. Hopefully it will spread. One of the problems in this area (a few have been arrested) is that there is a group getting a heads up when shelves will be stocked. They get there and buy it all up and resell it (that was the arrest part).

I still feel that the scalpers are not the problem. They aren't hording it - they are flipping the ammo to a scared ammo buying public - who are storing it just in case.......
I honestly think that we are seeing the average American ammo buyer approaching the feeling of having "enough" ammo for now. The pattern will return to buying a few boxes now and then, instead of "all that I can get every time I go to the store." I didn't see any heavy sales activity - just people browsing and shopping. They limit .22lr sales to one box per family, but no limit on other ammo.
The salient point for me is the ever so gradually increasing availability of ammo!
Not to mention the Smith & Wesson M&P-15 Sport selling all over town for $599. with Magpul flip up dual aperture rear sights and Pamg. Almost no reason not to own a couple if you like 5.56 AR's...and I have come to like these mouse guns......

What stores did you see them at. My great aunt is interested. Hehehe This guy seems to always have them: linkNo brick and mortar store, mail order and meet at the warehouse sales. This is where I got the first two that the Tennessean circus monkeys stole from me: linkGood people to deal with, but they only get in a couple at a time. I believe that Impact Guns and Bud's Gun Shop has them online in the same price. I've seen folks on the web trashing this gun, but based on my own experience, I can't say enough good about it - as a lower cost, very reliable utility rifle. Barrels used to be 8:1 twist rate, but now they have gone to 9:1 Here is a review of the rifle link

LOL - When everyone around you shoots 7.62/.308/300 mag/30.06/.50 BMG - you hear .22 (.223/5.56) caliber rifles being affectionately called mouse guns! Marc

No 22lr and what other calibers they did have was expensive.

We have a Gander that just opened here in Fenton, MO. During the grand opening, they apparently had a bazillion rounds of 22. I was able to sweet talk the gals at the counter into letting me go thru twice and I bought up about 2500 rds. They have apparently been stocking up on this for awhile now and let it go as a promo to get folks in the door. 556 was reasonable but, other calibers were really high. Even some 22 boxes of 50 were going for over 9-10 bucks.
