It's cool and techno but I would imagine for the price I'd rather just shoot you three times and be done with it.

They have been around for a long while - along with Dragons Breath, Flechette and Razors - but not what I would spend my money on. As you indicated, thywar - I'll take conventional loads. 12ga heavy slug or buck shot loads are simply incredibly powerful on their own.
The only serious "improvement" that I've seen to 12ga loads in many, many years are hardened Sabot style slugs in 3.5" ultra-mag. Shoot a few of them through thick building materials like brick/rock/studs/drywall/steel, etc. at 10-50 yards, and any preconceived notions of "it's just a shotgun" will melt away......
I'm a 12ga guy and have been for 45+ years. Aside from a .50 BMG, there isn't much within my reach that will outperform the sheer energy of a 12ga with the right load, in close ranges.
A year ago, I was showing one of SIL's what a standard 12ga slug (1 Oz. Remington Slugger - Walmart) would do to lumber. We grabbed a bunch of "cut-off" scraps of 2x6 and 2x8 from Home Depot and propped them up vertically, shooting through the so called 2" side.
Anyone want to guess how many boards the cheapest slugs penetrated at point blank range, over and over again?

I agree with you both.
Back in the day we tried some fletchets, and cutter type rounds, supposed to get through brush/jungle easier, we just stayed with slugs and 00
I had never seen any for handguns before.
12ga pump is my #1 weapon of choice too. I do have a few 12ga. flares, they come in handy for remote trip wires, as signals from a remote sentry, and in starting a fire in wet/windy conditions.

It has a cool factor, but rich for my blood, My regular 12 ga. with shot replaced with fishing hooks also works well.

Been in and around welding for many years. Tungsten as in the kind used for gas tungsten arc welding would in 'theory' make for excellent AP Flechette's. Not that I would ever load up a 12 gauge like that.

Is using dimes illegal somehow? It takes about $1.60 to fill up a shell, or so I've read.

Don't know if it's illegal or not. I suspect it's not.

Is using dimes illegal somehow? It takes about $1.60 to fill up a shell, or so I've read. Some guys do weird things when they are young - especially when they own 12ga shotguns and a best friend's Dad reloads. NOT that I would ever try this stuff, but I think that dimes provide rather lackluster performance. Any experimental loads must be designed for a specific distance range. For example, a large diameter hard steel ball will inflict absolutely incredible damage up close, but it will fly like a screw-ball down range, while scoring your barrel, unless you sabot them. Exotic loads can be tailored to do almost anything you want - BUT there will always be appropriate compromises - and consistency is difficult at best. IMHO, factory loads in Magnum and Ultra-mag can do just about anything that I would want to get done up close. Thinking in terms of long term SHTF or not - 12ga shells are an incredibly good investment for use "as-is" or for the powder, hulls, wads and lead supplies........today. I firmly believe that may change in the not too distant future. In fact, the only ammo that I'm buying these days is 12ga in buck and slug. Remember that.22lr was a couple of cents per round or less............ I have favorite heavy shot loads, but I don't overlook the value of even the cheap Win/Rem/Fed low brass bird shot at crazy low prices on sale. Marc

Too true Marc. Today I bought 10 boxes of 3" number 4s. How I get them to fire in my RG 22 single action I haven't figured out yet but I'm optimistic
