OT's cordage thread got me to thinking about another item but I'm not sure what the name is. Climbers place one foot in a loop, pull down on the rope above them, get lifted up, then repeat the process till you reach your destination. I think it works something like that.
Would be useful to climb trees and other heights.

CL you may be referring to a Prusick Minding Pulley: Prusick Minding Pulley You can do the same with the Prusick Knot. Was spelunking during my college days and we were in a cave in North Georgia. Four or five of us on this trip. To get out of the cave required a hand over hand up a rope about 20-25 ft. I was the last one out. Everyone was muddy and wet so the rope was slick as . . . well it was slick when I was ready to climb. No way I could climb that slick rope hand over hand. Made it up and over with a crotch harness and prusick knots. Came up over the edge, looked behind the guys helping me out and spotted a Timber Rattler. Was just getting daylight and no one else had seen it. Prusick Knot . . . definitely a good one to know. A modified Prusick works well to tension tent/hammock ropes as well.

You guys rock! Yes I think that would be a good knot to learn making and using. Any other ideas of simple rope techniques to make and used to climb trees would be welcomed. Pulleys are great but not everyone travels with one in their back pocket to use when needed.

Prusik's are nice but unreliable. A prusik made out of 550 on 550 will slip repeatedly. I prefer a Klemheist instead. Similar knot but better and stronger looping without slipping. www.animatedknots.com/klemheist/index.php
