OK, after a bit of study on this sample map, how about using the RR tracks to both cross the river and transit back to your home area? Would give you easy walking, woods for cover most of the way and gets you closer than the water would and since I don't carry a boat....I do however wear shoes daily and carry some walking/hiking shoes in my vehicles. I noted a hypothetical bad side of town and dropped the work place smack into it. As CWI posted, making your way on foot through that would not be fun. Also for argument sake, let us say the river is up and flowing much faster than normal. Would you still opt for a boat in those conditions? Even the best trolling battery will not get you far enough upriver but could at least get you across in a safer area.... hrm still much to think on here... Attachments:

I would still be going for the river. Any bridge over a body of water would be subject to immediate lockdown by government types in a shtf scenario. This can be due too many reasons, such as securing the town, military troup movements ect. RR bridges are also targets as many a war has demonstrated. I'd take my chances with the normal bridge before I'd expose myself on a R.R. bridge. There is also the problem of being a fish in a barrel for a sniper.
My take on it.

I think I understand the challenge here, so here goes with my get-home to brothers plan. Wait until dark, leave work and travel across the field north to the river, which I'm going to assume flows right to left. Take my inflatable pool float out of my backpack (cost me $1 at Walgreen's and folds down to laptop size) and blow it up, then get on it and float silently with the current, always hugging the left bank. Just south of the Robert Pine Blvd bridge crossing, steer left into that tributary and float until I'm level with brothers' house. Exit the river, deflate and re-fold pool float, make my way across that field and I'm home with my big strong brothers: WC, Crash, cwi555, thywar, mud, (contd of course)...

The river in this area flows from left to right. That is where the current becomes an issue. The brothers house has been brought up several times but nobody really thought of what might be there:) The tributary is an actual river in the area and flows within a mile of the location I marked brothers. We actually know this area very well though the icons are not true, the premise of the exercise to adapt and overcome is going as planned. years back both main bridges were closed due to a tornado but none of the RR bridges were. The potential issues CWI outlined are valid to be sure and IMHO probably the best solution in a worst case scenario. Now that we have that, how about other options? You may have to look at the other maps again to find some of the other means of escape but they are there. My brother and I actually made these up months ago but I cannot for the life of me find them so how bout those alternates? and some more participation would be nice too

Well, if you want to go out in left field, you can always pack a powered parachute in your truck. ;D

LOL! YUP I carry a powered chute in my tool box under the seat:) So how and where would you stow a boat? stick to the wally world inflatable with a paddle in your trunk? or would you opt for something else? With transients and heavy fishing in the area it would almost have to be carried in your vehicle...If you chose to cache it please show where so we may get a better idea for a REAL area (again this is really the area I am in +/- 50 miles but the situation and locations are fictional)
EDIT: OK one more question CWI, would you consider at all the tracks? not the bridge part but using the river to cross and the tracks to move on.
