I'm not. I try to educate my students about the basics, and little by little, I think I've made some progress. Much of what's on that site would be considered "out there" at school.

My sister lives in Illinois. She just went to her first ever shooting lesson this week. It was fun to hear her tell me about it and how she is going to get her CHL. A year ago she wanted nothing to do with guns and didnt want husband to have one. Now, well she's shopping around. Its the smell of something in the air. The move ontoward the WROL, a crappy assed economy, and threats from every conceivable angle with distention struck down with the force of a hurricane. Its the smell of it in the air troops.

A litmus test if you will.... I agree with what your saying, and see it in these parts, but it's not the first time it's been seen in this country.
Government reaction is the litmus test. The feds and or their media lapdogs will come out with (if they haven't already) several stories and or arrest of survivalist types. They will resurrect old stories, redirect the narrative, all in the form of a demonization campaign. All the 'stories' will cast survivalist as Malcontents, or worse.
The same thing they did the first time they turned the word 'survivalist' into a scarlet letter.

The Gov always has been and always will be leery of those people that depend on themselves to survive. Independent thinkers do not conform and are a threat to the good old boy network. Not to long ago we were in the same boat, sayings like "we the people" put us all on the same page. Not anymore today it's them and us, just look how they live and then look what they give us. To the gov were only good for fattening the hog, once that has been accomplished were excess baggage. Once again see how the fat rats live, they expect the best of everything at the expense of the rest of us...them and us. I really truly believe they do think they are better then us.

It does seem to be going that way but time will tell, the word is spreading that's for sure.

They will spend a normal persons life time salary on a watch, that they just toss on the ground if it doesn't shine in just the right way. They should think back to Marie Antoinette and how well that worked out for her.

I've found a lot of such intrests in the mountain culture (they know what they are doing!!) and "outsiders" leaving the urban suburban areas (those that can afford to leave)and coming to the mountains with the idea of prepping. CERT even sponsors a "preppers" fair each year as a money maker. Very well attended last year with 50 + vendors. Spots filled up this year as well.
Those coming to the mountains have "good intentions" but if you don't know the hills they can be as hostile as a desert . . . . seriously!!! They bring a handfull of heirloom seeds and think they can feed their family. A lot of misguided folk we'll just have to deal with one way or the other.
On lady down the road planted her "garden" under a huge oak tree on the west side of a hill ... no morning sun and only 2-3 hours of evening sun if that much. The learning curve is just gonna bee too steep.

Somebody must be prepping. The stores in my area have not had a single firesteel in stock for some time, and checking at Bass Pro Shop in Denver yesterday they did not either. Same for .22 rim fire and other common ammunition calibers - it just has not come back on the shelf.

Most likely they will buy stuff they have no idea how to use and likley not practice with. Firesteels are a good example. Some people think a pile of grass twigs and sticks will just magically light up simply by throwing some sparks at it.

You remind me of a conversation I had with some of my students in which the child assured me, in a very bored tone, that he knew how to start a campfire. We were outside on the wood-chip-covered playground where several trees provide the occasional fallen twigs. The boy said, "All I have to do is rub 2 sticks together." I told him to have fun.

I told him that, lol. Tinder and kindling are words beyond his ken. I've had plenty of discussions with older kids about the practicalities involved, but this boy really thought he knew his stuff. I told him to pay attention to everything his dad did next time they were out. The boy is no longer a student at the school.
