There is a time limit on filters as well. The advertising assumes continuous use. Still the should have faired better than that.

Better pricing on Geron's find then I bought them for but I like mine a lot.
If you install a bike tire valve in your top bucket you can use a tire pump and create pressure in your top bucket and increase your gallons per hour flow rate.
The little ones that fit in an individual water bottle are great too.

I have Black Berkey filters and ceramic filters. Now that I'm thinking of it the attic is probably not a good place to store the plastic filters due to the extreme temp fluctuations.

Are you aware that Berkey had problems with the black filters back a few yrs. ago? I was completely shocked at finding out! You may want to get them out and test them.
