I help friends and family select weapons by shooting a short video of them firing - in profile. It has been my experience that excess muzzle flip causes a delay in re-acquisition of the target center. I know some big, experienced shooters who have stepped down a notch, in favor of follow up shot time with less recoil. I don't shoot a 9mm, but it's impressive to see 15-19 rounds delivered on target in a few seconds - I can't argue that one!
I will never forget seeing a petite little gal put 10 rapid fire rounds of .22lr inside of a 5-6" circle at 25-30 feet in about 3 seconds - then look me in the eye and ask: "So, you really don't think that would be lethal?" I WOULD NOT want to be on the downrange side of her. She explained that she switched from 9mm to an SR-22, because she realized that she could put a full magazine of CCI Mini Mags in very tight circle, virtually anywhere she wanted, almost instantaneously - and that she can keep her skills razor sharp with cheap ammo.
I will never say that .22lr won't work for self defense, without more information. As an "up close and personal, in your face, get off of me gun" - she changed my perspective.
Just a thought from a guy who thinks that 9mm is a small round.......

If...you ever, ever happen to torch off a .357 round from that little rascal, from inside your shorts? PleASE take a picture, then give a full review? ROF laughing till I choked Also remember that she can fire a revolver from within a pocket or purse, but a semi auto may not successfully rack the next round. [/quote]

I was thinking coat pocket - not going to create any unnecessary concussion in my shorts.......

My hubby gave me a purse gun for Christmas... a .22. <rolls eyes> I told him if I shot an assailant with that and he found out about it he'd probably kick the crap outta me. So now I have a .38 police special.

Oh yeah. Now you're talking serious .22. It's the plastic handles that make it unique

Sticking to my one caliber rule, they do make 9mm revolvers now.
I need to find the video's that were on here once, showing a .22 long rifle penetrating further and doing more damage than a .38. Also remember that the military specs for a satisfactory round is something about penetrating a 1" oak board from 100 yards. A .22 lr will do that from a rifle.
Don't think a .22 won't make a good defense weapon for the right person, it could get you killed. It's shot placement that does the deed. I have seen a lot of people survive a misplaced .45 round.
But I have never seen anyone walk away from any caliber placed through the eye and into the brainpan.
Shot placement comes with practice/practice/practice.
We practice with .22 conversions on the hardware we carry, because its cheap and it allows lots of shots to create muscle memory and reflex reactions.
Yes it is important to also shoot with the rounds you intend to carry so you get used to the noise and difference in recoil. But we shoot almost every day with .22 compared to once a week with 9mm.
Just my .02
