A distiller (store bought or homemade) works good to distill water (and other things) The amount of heat is directly related to the time it takes to create a given amount of product. Solar heat will power the process, just take a very long time to create much product.
Wrap the copper tube around a piece of 4" PVC pipe to get a good tight coil. Then run the coil through a bucket of ice to increase the distilling time faster after you have the hottest fire the equipment/process will take.
When out away from ice use the colder water from your bad water source (such as sea water) to cool the coil quicker and speed up the process.
If you have plenty of time solar is good because you don't have to watch it to keep it from going dry. With a fire that would be a bad thing but with solar the process just stops.
