One of these days I'm going to have to break down and get one.

Well buy quality hearing protection. When I had a chance to shoot one (it was just three rounds. You aren't going to wear any when SHTF right?) I didn't wear any and I had ringing for two weeks. They do go boom!

Speaking of booms.....
My wife bought me an annual pass to my favorite outdoor gun range, for my birthday. I can shoot down at the ranch anytime, but it always turns into the kids burning my ammo. Sunday at the range, several people were shooting silenced weapons. One nice lady let me shoot her AR-15's in 300 BLK and 6.8, with suppressors on them. Using sub-sonic ammo, those things were incredibly quiet, but won't cycle the bolt. But, even the standard higher velocity rounds were still dang quiet - no hearing protection required.
There was also a guy with 10" or 12" long suppressor on a Ruger 10/22 shooting subsonic rounds. I was really surprised at the suppression level! Probably only usable at close range, and again, not enough energy to cycle the action. Once he stepped up to 1200 fps, I heard the mild, but distinctive "crack" of the round going supersonic, but still very, very quiet - and reliable semi auto operation.
I've resisted going that route for years, not because of the $200 tax stamp, but registration with the ATF bothers me. But, now they have become very commonplace around here for .22lr through 300 mag. I'll likely pull together just enough parts to stay legal, but not proceed until needed.
I'm thinking that an SR-22 with a factory threaded barrel would offer some interesting advantages.......

survivalbunker.proboards.com/thread/8840/thread-guideCheck the other pages on this site. I bought an old single shot .22 and totally rebuilt it just to shoot sub-sonic ammo, or rather let the Grandkids shoot sub-sonic ammo. It is amazing how much better a 7 year old is at staying on target and not pulling the shot when they don't hear or expect to hear that loud report. Not to mention how much safer it is for them to shoot a bolt action until they get used to shooting safety.

The Mosin is loud but it also packs a heavy punch, its long and heavy but it is also accurate a long way out and it will punch a hole through a piece of 1/2" iron when it gets there.

Be very very careful.....these things will multiply in the safe....and end up in their own safe.... Gander Mountain by us is actually carrying them again...kinda stiff price $179....guess the days of the $80 buck ones are over....Please don't post a whole bunch of sites that have the cheap prices...unless they have free shipping and are in stock.....LOL Haven't shot one since my surgery....but the Bubba-ized 1917 Remington Hex in scout mode is one of my favorites. Needs to get back out.

$179? Better deal than the $199 from Cabela's out here.

Like everything in the gun world they became popular because you could buy ammo and the gun cheap. Now it's what the market will bear

The weather finally cooled off a bit, (82 this afternoon) so I sent some more 7.62x54r downrange. My eyes are old, so open sites have an inherent limitation for me. But, I kind of got into a groove today and was holding decent groups at 75-100 yds with the Mosin. When I switched to my AR with a 3-9x42 scope, I only shot half of a mag, then went back to the thumper because it was more fun. I really like the energy level delivered downrange by a 30 caliber rifle round. Maybe I need to trade the AR-15 for an AR-10. Yeah, I can carry a whole lot more 5.56 than 7.62, and the cheaper .22 caliber military round lets me stack it high and deep. But, I'm more likely to need a fast acting, high capacity rifle for hunkered down defensive shooting, than running through woods playing Rambo. (Not that I'm old or anything like that ) The well known, flat trajectory of a .308 round, from a semi auto rifle with 20 round magazines.......... what's not to love! The only problem is that I've never sold a gun. It just goes against my grain..... Marc

I had 26 guns when I left for the Marines and my StepFather sold all but 3, then I had several hundred when I left TX 20 years after that and I sold some of them off. Its hard to let any of them go.
Recent I sold off to standardize some, I say sold off, most I gave to kids or Grandkids so they could stock all different calibers while I stuck with just 8 or 9 or 10 .........
