I took the AR-15 out today to get a little practice in. At the last minute, I grabbed my favorite Mosin M44 on the way out the door. I have a bit of modern 7.62x54r (non corrosive) put up, but I have a few hundred rounds of very old brass cased ammo too, so I thought I'd shoot that up. I expected some FTF's but I didn't have even one problem out of 66 rounds that I sent down range today. My point? This ammo is as old as I am! Made in 1952 and still going strong, with a rifle made in 1955......

They are every bit as tough as the Mauser k98. That is a good looking example.

A few years back, I bought a bunch of M44’s and a whole lotta copper washed, steel cased ammo in spam cans. Back then, they cost $75 to $90 and the ammo was thirteen to eighteen cents per round. I wanted everyone to have at least one of these and a sealed spam can of 440 rounds put away for emergencies. (The other half of each 880 round case was for practice)
I’m sure that they perform well past where I can see, but I just couldn’t get comfortable with the 91/30 barrel that extended into the next county!
Some of the M44’s that I bought burned in up the Bastrop fire, but seven are still sitting in the closets of friends and family, in case they are needed. The blond Polish number in the picture cost me twice the going rate at the time, but it is one of two that I kept for myself. They produce a pretty respectable fireball on a dark night with that short barrel.
It’s funny, but everyone complains about the nasty recoil of the M44 carbines causing bruises, but I think that the rifle weight really absorbs the kick – compared to something like a Maverick 88.
I'm still amazed at the 62 year old ammo at 100% so far. (It just can't keep performing perfectly forever)

Sounds like a great day Marc.....burning powder makes any day a good day though.
Nice looking rifles. Old Enfields are the only retired rifles I've fooled with, and been a few years.
Glad ya had some fun!

I am glad you put up this thread. It gave me cause to remember that I have a few put back. Whem ammo went crazy I wasn't going to give 200 a case and filed them away. Time to relook at the ammo again, been seeing some sales.

I never played around with a '44; just the 91/30. I love what the round/rifle team can do on the range, and boy is the rifle a rugged design. I particularly love the simplicity of the overall action.

Mosin M-44, buy it for the bayonet, keep it for the muzzleflash and BOOM!

Thank you, but I believe that it is from Poland. And now that I look at it, it's 1952! The ammo must be the 1955 I had in my head - gonna check that! www.mosinnagant.net/global%20mosin%20nagants/Polish-M44.aspBut, I do have a 1955 Romanian too. She may not be as pretty as the blonde, but her action is slick! Marc
