Anyone have any practical experience with them?
I've watched some vids on use and dyi builds. I actually have pretty much all the stuff to build one. Who knows maybe I'll try.
But....before I waste any time on it...what y'all think?

I call them the "gadget twins" 'cause they're so good at it, that would be geron and graf. One or both of them built one but I don't remember which.

Must have been geron I've played with the idea and decided to go with primative flint/steel instead, maybe a winter project whenthings slow down. Missasip build one, are you looking at the one with the AA Maglite I thought that was cool because then it would be a multi use item.

I have one (fire piston) but I didn't make it. Found too good a deal to mess with building one. Forgot where i got it though.
That's an excellent, vid. Simple with common materials. Got everything I need to build one 'cept the copper stub out. Think I'd use Delrin rod instead of steel. Little easier to tap and not enough stress on the screws to mess up the threads in the delrin.

Built one, didn't work....built one from Mini Mag light, didn't work,.... and flashlight no longer works. Congrats to all that have......but I will reduce my blood pressure and not fool with them as long as there is a Ferro rod or Bic left in the world.
Not something that can be "easily made" in the bush, from natural materials....so you need to make/buy ahead of time and carry with you.......so why not a Ferro rod or Bic?

I'm just a grumpy old guy that has wondered around in the woods all my life, and didn't know till I started hang out on the interweb that I have been doing it wrong all these years. Did find out about a whole lot of stuff I never knew about, or knew about and didn't know what it was called (batoning)....and it all good knowledge to have.......But not really practical. Y'all can carry a fire piston if you want....If some one gave me one...that worked...I might try it out....but just extra weight to carry.

I guess I dont get the point of these. They seem impractical where a fire steel would serve one better. What is the advantage of a piston set up?

Knowledge is power...that's why I asked the question in the op. Practical experience. I never want to limit myself to one item. Firemaking, water purifcation etc.. Better to have as many options as practical is all. You know I'm always looking for the next thing that's better 'en sliced bread... Jimmy

You are correct, Knowledge IS power.....but use your common sense.
I think it's good to know as many possible ways to make fire or process water....or whatever,... make the decision what you want to use and go for it....then practice, practice, practice.....
