Okay, TW mentioned a Satphone in his Scenario Part 2. I looked it up to find out what they were.
Now besides their prices what are the advantages and disadvantages of each. Do you have to subscribe to a mobile company, study or apply for a license to operate them, any info to help me understand more about them. Is it because of their prices that more people don't own them?

The way I understand it, your typical cell phone uses cell towers. If the cell towers are down, so is your phone. Like in Katrina, so much power out, cell towers out, no phones.
Sat phone connects directly to satellites circling the earth. So, even if another katrina hits and the whole state is without power, you sat phone still works (as long as IT has power and the satellites are still operating). Of course, the person you are calling has to have an operating phone...

Thank you so much for explaining this to me. Besides the Sat phone capabilities I'm sure there's a hefty price attached to it. Plus, if you don't know anyone with one it would pretty much be useless unless you could communimate with ham operators or such.

As most of my com would be local. I still op for the 2meter/70cm radio's. Radiodity as mobile dual band in car rigs for less then a buck fifty ($150.00) plus all those nice hand held. I do not work for or have financial interest in this comp. www.radioddity.com/us/If you really wanted to go all out set up your own repeater system.

At my age and with my memory I already have my own repeater system. It's trying to get people I know to act like it's the first time they've heard it that's difficult

Depending on your plan, you will most likely be charged a premium (on top of the already expensive call) to call a phone that is not on the same network.....ie $12 per minute.

Okay, it works through satellites, so let's say TSHF, who is gonna send me a bill and will it still be useable?

Okay, it works through satellites, so let's say TSHF, who is gonna send me a bill and will it still be useable? I know that we used them during Katrina and they did provide us coms. So, like Crash said even if the rest of the grid is down these will likely work. We use them also for secure coms in any number of situations and Im sure the other services do as well esp the Navy way out on the Big Blue. I also think pilots carry them in their bail out kits too.

That was kind of the point, even if you get a phone on the cheap, the activation and minute plan is awful pricey. You know what I'd like to have if you could still get them activated was the old "bag" car phones. Man, you could call from the moon on those old things. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola_Bag_Phone

I hear ya, my very first phone, given to my husband from his brother. Traded it in for our first pocket sized phone. Messed up royally when we did that. Thanks for answering all my questions.
