I bought the Rossi Matched Set (22. 20 ga, .243) for my Grandson on his 10th Birthday. www.rossiusa.com/product-details.cfm?id=82&category=2&toggle=&breadcrumbseries=Aside from being a single shot, I only have good things to say about them. Good enough that I bought several Matched Pairs in .22 and 12 ga. as hide guns. Breaks down to about 26"x6" and under 7 lbs. Nothing against .410, but when/if "finding" ammo becomes an issue IMO 12 ga. will be easier to find. Plus I reload 12 ga. and have the supplies I need to load about 1000 more than the 1000 I already have. They make barrels for the .223 and 7.62x39

J, my reason for love of the older guns is fit and finish. In days long gone there was a connection with gun makers and hunter/shooters, they made an effort to bring out the soul of the weapon through little details like hand fit and actual blueing instead of spray on black like all are now, not to mention honest to goodness black walnut wood, not plastic. Spend some time, find an ''old safe queen'' and you will not regret it. Brings to mind a very worldly....oh that's a different story. LOL Thanks to all for the honest, been there done that, opinions. Way better than the "I heard" stories. I think, after mulling it over again after the responses, I will probably (actually I will) go with the Marlin 30-30 and put the extra money toward a nice semi-auto .22 handgun for my wife's purse (sure-heard that story before). rednekidokie- Why the pre safety 336 as opposed to the post safety? thanks cwi- Since you already have .410 and .22, my suggestion is the 30-30 Henry lever. ..My wife's sentiments exactly. She likes the Marlin also (only for the price difference! Me..It is my money, I have been saving it up Wife..Yes, but you need adult supervision when you spend it on guns and knives! aaarrrgggghhhh! Again thanks to all: ps.I like southern redheads and CA blondes.. Jim

Not sure about the Golden Boy guns but my/my son's H001 22 is not a zinc receiver. it has a painted zinc cover over the receiver. I remember reading that the Golden boy models were proprietary brass from Pittsburgh.
I absolutely love love love my Marlins and have so far had no issues with the single Henry I have but again it is a 22. Pretty sure a couple members here shot mine at Camp David.
Here is some info I dug up
"Metal is called either ZAMAK or ZAMAC depending on the reference.
Base metal of zinc with amounts of Aluminum, Magnesium and Copper. It is NOT pot metal like used in matchbox cars. Used in lots of American made rifles and pistols for non stress parts. "
and strength comparisons:
Some comparisons of Zamak 3 to T6061 aluminum:
Melting point 729 vs 1061 Hardness 97 vs 95 (Brinell) Tensile Strength 268 vs 310 (MPa)
CWI could translate that to something we could understand I am sure. Now do NOT assume I am defending/promoting the Henry here, just putting out what I read.
If you could find a nice Marlin I would do like mentioned before and snatch them up. Also keep your eye out for the Winchester 94 Trapper...very sweet short gun. The AR-7 I was able to handle was also consistent with others in it felt cheap and the sights never stayed the same after take down. I managed to get a 10-22 takedown NRA edition and it has been fantastic.
hope this helps without sounding like a Colt snob

I agree with you rednekidokie, but the price being what it was I went ahead and bought the 336W. ($300.00) He only had it 6 mo or so. It had only been shot 3-4 times, looks new, and is tighter than a gnats azz over a rain barrell. He also is giving me a leather sling and a sock for it. Jim

Well, here is my 2cents Go for the Henry .... I would however go with the .44 or .357 and pick up a revolver in same caliber...

I'm a strong advocate of rifle/pistol in the same caliber.
.357/.38, .22, 9mm, .44 mag. If a person could have any of these in rifle/pistol I think they'd be in pretty good stead.
