To me, the strangest ingredient mentioned is adding butter but willing to try it.

True story from someone who had to start liking eating oatmeal all over again, me. A few weeks ago I woke up at 1 a.m. feeling hungry and craving oatmeal. Yes I did get up and cook me some, my doctor would be so proud of me.

I once knew an old Pig Farmer who said that he liked his oats just like his horses. Grab a handfull straight out of the box . . . uncooked.

Butter will make it taste a bit richer. Try it straight up with the peanut butter, then PB & Honey, then PB with the chocolate Hazelnut Spread (Nutella I think),or try adding hot chocolate mix.
As mentioned, any kinda fruit or dried fruit or nuts. Even when you make it sweet, add a tiny pinch of salt, it'll help bring out the sweetness.
A little diced ham or Tasso with a smooth smoked cheese is pretty good too, top with chives.

We used to cook Quaker Oats when I was a kid. Put some sugar on it then we'd pour the cream from a fresh gallon of raw milk over it. Butter is good on it. Just like grits, sugar and butter. But then coming from Oklahoma the only time we ate rice was for breakfast fixed the same as our oatmeal. As a side note I had to retrain my LOUISIANA born wife that it wasn't necessary to eat rice for every freakin meal. Potatoes were an exceptional side dish. She learned

Since we're discussing variations I tried something new today. I've been trying to eat healthier so I made half quinoa half oatmeal with a little cream, walnuts, sugar, vanilla and some wild blueberries that I had in the freezer. It turned out better than I thought it would.

It turned out better than I thought it would. Interesting blend. I've never tried quinoa but my niece has been after me to do so. I guess its time, like your idea.

I did add vanilla to my bowl of oatmeal this morning and definitely like it. You guys rock, thanks for the ideas and I guess I need to become more creative myself.

OOps, forgot what my grandma taught me... raw oats (quick oats) in a bowl with milk and sugar. Let it sit for a few minutes for the oats to soak up the milk. Or this Swiss-like variation: put quick oats in the blender and grind down until almost flour, then stir in chopped hazelnuts and your choice of dried fruit bits. Then you mix your portion with milk the night before and refrigerate it covered, so the milk soaks up the oats and rehydrates the fruits. My favorite commercial product of this was called Dr Oetker's Bircher Muesli, but that was back in the Iron Age when I was young. I think the Oetker stuff also had sugar, maybe powdered sugar in it.

I love oatmeal bars, cookies and such. Cannot stomach hot soggy oatmeal cereal.
