A customer gave me a Mossberg Maverick 88 on Friday.
He had an NRA sticker on his window so we got to talking about guns. He and his wife travel around the country in their motor home full time. He recently picked up the 12ga while in New Mexico, but after only one round, he decided that the recoil was just too much. He said that they were going to stick with their handguns and their AR15. After he told me about the bad recoil, I offered to buy it. He said that I discounted the battery price so much that he felt that we were even.
It's chambered for 3" with a 28" vent rib on it - Modified choke installed, 5+1 in 2-3/4", one less with 3" magnums.
If it stops raining, I'm going to push some 2-3/4" and 3" buck and slugs through it today. Yes, Foster type slugs are OK with a Modified or Improved installed - the point of the fins are to compress. I want to see what the slug trajectory looks like, and the 00 pattern out of a 28" barrel with that choke. My point is to see if I am gaining much with the long barrel. I already have a long barrel O/U, and a shorty Maverick 88 pump, so this one may stay just as it is. Let's see how it swallows cheapo low brass rounds too.....

Well I don't know that I'd put Mossberg in a class with an RG. Does mossy have a plastic stock? I think that's a heck of a deal. Good way to pick up a gun. I'll be happy to hear what you think

The barrel isn't anything a chop saw or hacksaw can't handle. If you go that route, shoot for 20" to assure staying legal.

One I cut down to 18 1/2 inches still hits the target at 100 yards with slugs and has a very good group for rabbits and tree rats.

I got wrapped up in other projects, so I haven't tried it yet. I do know what you mean about staying CLEARLY in the long side of the tape measure. There is a guy named Randy Weaver......
Yes, TW - plastic. But I know from experience that they build a good shotgun that can take a beating.

Might be leary of slugs through that screw in choke barrel? I got a used rem 870 20'' rifle sighted barrel from a friend that someone had shot a slug with a mod choke. It bulged the tube and stripped the threads and pushed the choke out about a quarter inch. I gave it to a gun smith friend for a project of his. Just FYI.lol

Okie and I were talking at lunch today and we both love Mossys and Rems. I'd say you made out great and you can probably find another barrel for $100 or so to shoot slugs from

Just FYI.lol I surely do appreciate the heads up, because I've been known to do some pretty dumb things before! A bulged barrel was a disaster that almost happened. I'm am wondering if the choke in your example above was not properly/cleanly seated, or if a Sabot style slug was used. I've been shooting finned Foster type slugs through Modified and Improved chokes for 30+ years without a hitch. Some built-in, some threaded. Remington says that their Slugger are "designed for optimum results with smooth bore barrels, but may be fired through any choke." They go on to say: "However, improved cylinder provides the best results." I disagree about the "may be fired through any" choke part............ On the other hand, I know what kind of barrel pressures we are talking about, so ............caution is good thing. I've grown rather attached to my fingers, hands and head. Again, thanks for the heads up! Marc

I am like you. For years what ever shotgun + whatever shells = good to go. Guess it just takes one? The whole shooting thing is suicidal if you really break it down and think about it. Hold a high pressure bomb a few inches from your face, and set it off? What could possibly go wrong?

8" worth of tube gone and it's problem solved either way. I would suggest a pattern with game loads first. Might be a good small game shot as is.

Don't forget your favorite semi auto handgun, with slide recoiling right between your eyes at super sonic speed, only held on by a tiny piece of metal or pin. OMG!

If you are using it for a SD gun, may want to try those Federal Low Recoil 2 3/4 shells. They will punch out decent enough accuracy off hand at 50 yards and they don't bruise the shoulder nearly as bad. I figure they got plenty of whack even with reduced power and handle sooo much easier.
