I was at a gun show this weekend and saw some fairly nice looking Mosins for about $125 ea. They looked clean enough but know little about this iconic Russian weapon. I almost bought one however, I just didn't know if they are worth it or not. I know there is a ton of ammo out there for it and cheap too. Any thoughts from the crowd on the 7.62.x54r?

What is not to like? Where can you buy a high powered, long range rifle for $100, and a 440 round can of ammo for another $85? For $200 total you go home with a proven battle rifle, ammo, and a gun bag. I can't even replace a tire on my truck for that! I like them, and have several. I prefer the carbine model 44 as a personal choice. They will be my hand out emergency weapons if the need ever arises, if not, it was a grands worth of insurance well spent.

i love mine. accurate out to the 30 or so yards i can shoot mine. sturdy, was cheap. gotta keep them cleaned, but thats fun. paid 100 for mine. only thing is, kicks like a mule. but, that keeps me from shooting too much i guess. lol. people at the range wonder what im shooting as its soo loud. lol. i really dont plan on buying any kind of tactical rifle, this will serve my needs. also want a .22 rifle, but thats another discussion.

Before I sold off most of my guns I had two just because they punch a hole from a long way off and I found rounds at .10, but that was when I was gun poor.

Congrats....you will be sorry, in a good way.
It has been my experience the Nagants are like potato chips....can't eat just one.
Used to really look down at the old Milsup "junk" and wonder why anyone would bother...till I was talked into one....the first one.
You will be bit by Mosin-ites....go with it and enjoy...nothing like cranking up a M38 or M44 carbine at dusk, and see the smoke and fire...ath, arh, arh.

When caving around the shows and pawn shops watch for hex receivers (older) models..... harder to find.....but every once in a while you with find a Remington made Russian rifle. Unfortunately this one had been Bubba-ized....too bad....still a buy at $80 bucks. Also look for the M38 carbine (w/o bayonet) or M44 carbine, (has bayonet) M39's are mostly Finn rebuilds, action by SAKO then was several armories that went together to form the SAKO of today. Any thing you ever wanted to know about Mosin Nagants; 7.62x54r.net/

There are two kinds of Mosin people. Those who haven't shot them and laugh at people who do cuz they think they can't afford something better. And there are those who own 5 of them and is currently trying to get the 6th into the safe without the DW noticing.

As one of my Gun Tests magazines put it: a Mosin Nagant plus the ammo is pretty much the "most bang for your buck" that you'll get. I have an ex-dragoon 91/30 made by Tula. Is it crude? Yeah. Is it the most accurate? Not by a long shot, but for an old standard-issue rifle it's not bad. Is the round hard-hitting? You bet. When I shot a bowling pin target at a local range with the Mosin, pieces were still flying when I took my eyes off the sights. There are also private folks who can take your Mosin and bump it up to "match grade," at a pretty steep price. I personally wouldn't bother with that when there are plenty of perfectly good match-grade rifles to buy instead, and likely for a lower price. The 91/30 is a pretty long rifle, so it's not something I'd want to use in an urban setting in CQC. For short to medium-range sniping however it definitely has possibilities. For maintenance: once the cosmoline is removed you must keep an eye on it for rust depending on how humid the air is where you live. I run CLP and brushes plus wipes through my Mosin barrel and chamber multiple times a year just to keep the rust potential in check. The action of the Mosin is arguably the simplest among all of my rifles. The bolt is only a few pieces, and once you figure out how to take it apart and put it back together it's a piece of cake. Recoil tends to be more manageable with the 91/30s from what I've heard. I don't have an M44 so I can't compare the recoil of that to my 91/30. Just my 2 cents.
