I have ordered from the other site before but will not be doing so any more. I decided not to after he started ignoring people's questions. It wasn't as if he wasn't there, I checked the time of the questions and the last time he logged on. And then add on what he did with Kevin... I will not be supporting his business. I will find someone else or use the Light My Fire brand.

I am 50+ years old and have made many fires in that time and not a single one of them was with a FireSteel. So tell us what you did use I bet it was a lighter. Everyone that goes into the woods should have a firesteel and know how to use it . Just saying bics will go dry or break, same for zippos. At least one firesteel should be had by all.

Thumbs up to that, offtrail. For those looking for firesteel alternatives, do a google search for the word(s) mischmetal or misch metal. These are ferrocerium-type rods that give lots of robust sparks. I'll bet cwi555 knows more details on the metalurgy involved in this stuff!

I have purchased firesteels from Kevin “paracordist” a while back, and if I remember right he has offered to sell a similar item at the same or cheaper price for those that are interested. He is a member and you can PM him for more details. If you look him up under members, he goes by paracordist, not Kevin. My favorite one is the Magnesium fire starter, a magnesium bar with a firesteel glued to the side, they are waterproof, and magnesium helps you start a fire under damp conditions, it is cheap, last a long time, and you can even buy it at Walmart. The price ranges from $6-8 depending where you get it from.

This is what I used- This is my fire box. I need to restock it. Tin with hole for making char-cloth Flint and Steel Char-cloth Various Tinder. I usually have a small lens as well but I guess I have misplaced it? The last major outing I made, which I have mentioned a few times before, was a Solo river trip. I took the Cache River to the White River to the Mississippi River, all going down river or South. Then I traveled back up the Arkansas River and took out back in Little Rock. This took 14 days and I traveled the entire length of the White River Natl. Wildlife Refuge (68,000 acres). All primitive tent camping on the river banks. I made a fire each night and never used a lighter even though I have both a Bic and a Zippo with me all the time. I had one in my shirt pocket at every camp but challenged myself to start all my fire without a lighter. A good exercise indeed and my confidence in my fire building skills increased after each fire. I have no hang-ups about ANY method of fire starting and think the more ways you are skilled in that's all the better for you! Ferro rods are great and I have one and will use it on my next outing or even here at the house just because. Still haven't been successful with a bow-drill yet but then again I haven't tried very hard with it either.

Good luck on the bowdrill fire you will need it ;D Here is an idea do a video on a flint and steel fire, I like to see how other people do it. When looking at $1 ferro rods from Harbor Freight...keep in mind that sometimes you get what you pay for...or, said another way, you don't get what you don't pay for. I've had some cheap ferro rods that are terrible...they were a total waste of the buck I spent for them!
We're talkin' "survival" here. Spend a little more and get something that really works well!
