Ok all you techno couch potatoes who live and breathe every smart phone/TV/Bluetooth /etc from the luxury of your couch DO NOT SPEAK PERSONAL INFO IN FRONT OF YOUR SMART TV Evidently it hears that too and sends it to a third party. Sooo don't be acting out parts of 'Fifty Shades of Gray' in front of your TV. techcrunch.com/2015/02/08/telescreen/

That is why you should never use voice recognition software.

No worries about it here... the tv we still own is completely dumb. I've always presumed that "smart" devices (those with a camera and/or microphone included as original equipment), even before they were termed such, could be used against the owner.

I ain't got nuttin smart around this place. My desktop does not have a webcam and on my laptop I uninstalled the webcam program, have a small piece of black gorilla tape over the camera eyes, and an earbud taped to the microphone hole. That earbud is attached to a cheap tape player with Pink Floyd's Another Brick In The Wall playing round robin. Jim

It must be true what they say about great minds thinking alike
I have tape over the webcam
I have a phone jack without wires plugged into my mic port
I have another wire less phone jack plugged into my head phone port
The USB ports on my computer are disabled as are any and all connections except the one to my docking station and it runs through a security box so that anything coming from outside of my PC goes through the box and Norton before it gets to my PC, everything plugs into the docking station first, even the power cord

I use my speaker port several times each week at school for external speakers since the kids can't hear (sufficiently) on just my laptop's speakers. I also use my usb ports regularly at school. One is used every time I open the laptop because I don't like using either a mouse or a touchpad. I have a trackball and will probably go into hissy withdrawal whenever such a device is no longer an option.
