Found this and was very touched. Someone put a lot of work into this site listing lots of info about the soldiers who died in the Vietnam War. The traveling wall came to our hometown sometime back. Funny thing is it was in town, I really don't like going to town. Too, at the time I was working at school. Yet, everyday for two weeks I would leave after school to go help at the location until nightfall. It was like a magnet attracting me to it to help people locate names on the wall and do a keepsake rubbing. My sweetie stood guard at night for two weeks with other veterans, I believe that was good therapy for him. www.virtualwall.org/iStates.htm

Probably not a more moving monument in all of DC. It's a very emotional place and when you put your hand on that wall and pray for all of those souls and those that still live with it, it's quite an experience. I recommend seeing it anytime you have the opportunity.

The Wall is without a doubt the most moving monument/memorial I have been to. It is a very sobering experience.

I recommend seeing it anytime you have the opportunity. When we went to DC in Sept 2007 we went to the wall. Had to.

I've been to the wall. It is most definitely is moving and memorable. They all are to me. Death comes to us all, but not all die for a greater purpose. All who have served, and continue to serve deserve a hell of a lot more respect than they have gotten, or getting. Great words of wisdom cwi.

I posted this in the General Board section. It is a great resource of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. Can it be made into a "sticky" please?

Let us not forget our sisters who also gave all and ALL where VOLUNTEERS anhttp://www.vietnamwomensmemorial.org/vwmf.phpd Thanks for mentioning this. There is lots of interesting information to read of the many groups of women who were there alongside many soldiers doing their best to provide their needs of help while there.

The Wall
I went to DC several times on business and avoided the wall because I was not ready for it.
About 15 years after the fact I finally went one morning a daybreak. I wanted to avoid other people while I was there and I didn't want the people I was with in DC to go with me on my first time.
I wrote this after my visit. I have posted it before but could not find it.
Standing, Staring, Looking At The Wall
by woodyz
At dawns first light he sees it, standing cold and dark and wet, Half hidden by the ghost like fog, the crowd hasn’t got here yet. He hears it has the power, to take away his pain, He’s come to see and take a chance, he has everything to gain. He reaches out to touch it, afraid of what he’ll see. Chokes back his fears, holds back his tears and swears he will not flee.
Standin’, starin’, lookin’ at the wall, He hasn’t seen their faces, since the night they gave their all, He’s waited thirty years, to answer to their call, And now he’s standin’, starin’, lookin’ at the wall.
He reaches for the wall once more, one look and then he’ll go, Haunting eyes stare back at him, still empty, filled with woe. The scars upon his body, are not the ones he feels, His mind is where his trouble lies, he’s here to get it healed. He starts his search upon the wall, new guilt with every name, So many names are listed, this once great nations shame.
Their names are like a roll call list, etched in that cold black stone, He should be listed with them, but he’s standing here alone, As he re-lives the battle, a chill runs through his bones, He remembers now how each one looked and knows he’s not alone, He seeks in it’s reflection, an answer to their call, It’s their eyes are staring at him now, haunting from the wall.
Standin’, starin’, lookin’ from the wall, He hasn’t seen their faces, since the night they gave it all, They waited thirty years, for him to answer to their call, Now their standin’, starin’, lookin’ from the wall.
