Camoflauge - from the French word camofluer which means "to disguise". I know there has been at least one or two threads on this before but, thought there would be value in bringing it up again. There are all sorts of camo from good ol' Olive Drab (almost infinite shades) to black to guillie suits. There are Gucci-flauge patterns from Mossy Oak and Realtree in every pattern imaginable. Military patterns are too numerous to mention.
Hiding in the bush is one thing and what we think of when we talk cammo. I believe the concept of camofluer, extends to many other areas. Social camouflage, on-line cover and concealment, financial deception ( money laundering/front operations), guerilla asymmetrical warfare (VC were masters at this!), vehicle concealment, energy wavelength counter detection, overall spook 'field craft', and deep undercover cops. The art of being seen and invisible at the same time. Basically, anything that lowers your footprint.
When I was dealing with offenders in downtown ghettos of STL, I developed a concept I call "Urban Camoflauge". I noted that my offenders that kept getting busted did not have any concept of how to blend in. They all adhered to the gangsta dress code, drove blinged out cars with bad plates, constantly blared rap music, and adhered to incredibly predictable behavioral patterns. Its entirely possible that a drug dealer, dressed in kaki's and a polo, with a conservative hair cut and no gold teeth, driving a blue Volvo with the stock rims, updated plates/insurance and DL, and Mozart playing softly on the radio could have six kilos of cocaine in the back seat and the police would not even be able to see him. The mind is a funny thing, it sees often what it is trained to and sort of filters out the rest.
I think lowering the foot print is the key. Getting people to just roll their eyes right over you or your stuff is the goal. Deception, distraction, shape, size, color, silhouette, shade, etc all play a role in the success of hiding as applied to any given situation. If I wanted not to be particularly noticed at a wedding reception, my guillie suit wont cut it any more than my best blazer will while Im turkey hunting. If I went walking down the street in my everything tactical garb, I would be as bright a target as if I was wearing deer hunter orange. In another example, I've read where the best Private Investigators are sometimes an older, overweight Kool-Aid mom type woman dressed kinda plain who just sits quietly observing or casually interacting. The non threating demeanor and profile has people off guard and information just gets the job done surreptitiously.
I hope some of you would share your ideas on camouflage and how you use it to hide in the bush, in the boardroom, at work or anywhere else. How do you use out of the box ways to hide stuff on your person, or the car, or in plain sight? Do you use deception/concealment/distraction to lay low financially or online, on the streets of a city, or when SHTF?
