Ok... Kind of a basic question here with some observations.
Exactly how to store food long term.
I'm kind of at a loss here and have been tossing this around in my head for some time. We have taken the mylar in a 5 gal bucket approach. We are trying to store usable quantities. What I mean by that is this. I have seen people buy rice or beans and dump it into a bucket. So now you have a 5 gallon bucket of rice. What happens when you open it? Your going to have to use it all before it goes bad, gets bugs in it or what ever. If you open your beans and rice and bucket of powdered milk and so on, now you have several open buckets of bulk food with fresh air and fresh moisture in it.
I have been batting the idea around of making buckets for a week. Put a weeks worth of food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in a bucket and seal it up. That way when it gets opened it gets used with out compromising the rest of my stores. I havnt done the math on this yet or planed the meals out. We have a family of 6 so maybe I cant even fit a week in a bucket, I don't know. Now this bucket food will go into long term storage in the basement.
We also keep a months or so worth of food on our shelves, longer in some cases. We do our own canning and eat off that stock, we have quite a bit store bought canned stuff as well. But this is basically our groceries. We just try to keep an abundance on hand "just in case". What I am looking for in this discussion is storing long term, maybe some thing mobile. Say we need to split, I can toss some buckets in the truck and be well fed for a few weeks.
I dunno, what do you guys think. Ask me questions, I'll ask you questions, maybe we can all learn something
