I wouldn't say 13 is excessive either, not at all.
When I get my licenses over the next year, I'll be wanting to get quite a few.
There's a double-barrel I'm looking at for clay shooting, an M3 for shooting from hides/small game, a remington 700 in at least 338 and 30.06, a Mosin, a K98, and if the time comes where I can afford to spend 10 grand on a gun, a 50 cal as well. Amazingly they're legal here if you can justify the use for it ( Long range target shooting ).
If American media claims 13 to be excessive, the British media will probably look at me like a cross between the Terminator and the Anti-Christ!

It just came to mind and made me wonder what happened to the days where having a major gun collection was a proud point in a guys life. I remember growing up when you went to visit some one the guns were displayed openly in the main room of the house, as a focal point. And when you made a new friend one of the first questions was what kind of guns ya got, and do you have any to sell or trade? Oh well just another thing gone from my younger days. quote] It happened around the late 60's early 70's at my house. We had the guns my dad made hanging proudly on the living room wall. Then he took them down because he didn't want to offend anyone. I also think it depends on where you live. I hear people target shooting all the time when I'm working in the yard.

You are right Cowgirl. The story I told in reply #11 was around 68'-75' and we lived in Ft. Worth Texas. For all I know it may still be that way in Texas!

I won't say how many I own....since I really can't keep track since I keep losing so many on canoeing trips... But I would guess that your typical American is uncomfortable with ANY guns....but they won't consider it a "collection" until you've got at least 4 and they will consider it less of a collection and more of a "stockpile" somewhere around 10+. They don't really care how many adults live in the house, or how many legitimate sporting activities are devoted to each different gun. Somewhere in the double digits they will think you're a freak. Fine. Don't bring 'em all out at once and don't store them all in the same place. Resist the urge to show them off (I know it's hard) and you should be OK..... Wise counsel,..... Deploy your assets, never admit to anything..... This works with tools of all sorts, trailers, 4 wheelers, boats....mushroom picking spots. If you really want to insure more that one canoe trip.....dummy cord it to a milk jug

''But I would guess that your typical American is uncomfortable with ANY guns'' - MissJ
I know RNO said that was pretty much a rhetorical question but... Really? I don't believe that for a minute any TYPICAL American is uncomfortable with any guns.. That might be true in some areas.. (not even in some states). Just by judging from the number of gun owners across America I don't believe that to be the case.

I would say that the Rural folk around here has...
Their First 22 when they got for Christmas when they were 12
Their first deer rifle, probably a 30-30 lever gun or possibly a SKS
A single shot shotgun because they couldn't wait to get a pump
A Pump
A better deer rifle when they could afford it.
Then they get into pistols a little and get a Hi-Point
People laughed at them, then they saved up and got a Glock or Maybe a Smith
Then they got a "AUTO" shotgun
Then they were willed a 1903-A3 from Uncle Chester
They thought that was cool so they started a "Military Rifle" collection and got a M1 or Maybe a M1A1
Then they were laughed at by their friends and ended up buying an AR
THen they got into long range shooting and hunting and got a long range rig.
THen the 22 they had wasn't cutting it so they bought another 22
Then a 22 Pistol.
ANd when the wife wasn't looking they picked up another deer rifle.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
That's 15 firearms, a box of ammo a piece, and there you have it, an excessive amount of guns.

WC, you forget to tell them that list is all by the age of 21...nevermind what you get to play with once you are a thinking adult!!!
And that list just covers those in this area who don't like guns much!!
