Looks like I have a mini nature preserve right on my front porch! I have two Boston Ferns that hang on either side of my front porch. A gorgeous pair of Carolina Wrens have decided they would raise their family in one of them. I also have a dish garden that a very friendly Toad has set up housekeeping there and this is his second or third year to do so. He has little pockets dug out where he spends his day and then in the evening he will jump out and sit under the porch light and feast on the insects. The next morning he somehow jumps his fat squatty butt back up into the dish! I finally caught him do this the other morning and his ability to jump is pretty amazing. To think he can leap to the edge of the dish which is about 3 or 4 times higher than he is tall! Here's some photos, I've been playing with my new camera.      Here is a Carolina wren. I got this shot off the internet, my guests are a little too fast for me to catch a pic of.......Yet!  |

That is one content looking toad. I bet all his friends are jealous! Oh Yes, He is one happy Toad! He has the whole porch to himself, the garden all to himself. His homey little pot is fill with the best of potting soil and spaghum moss and he gets sprinkled with water everyday to keep him all cool and moist. He's pretty funny when I sprinkle the water on him. He squints his little eyes shut tight! ;D ;D ;D I'll have to try and get a shot of that. It's hilarious! |

Yea, I do love my toads. I have one in particular (Fred) that I make sure I keep an eye on his hole. I don't want to step on it and cave it in. I always check on him whenever I walk the yard. One day he was hanging out of his hole with his legs dangling behind him. It was so funny. I wish I had my phone on me so I could've gotten a pic. He's still a young one though. Not nearly as bit as yours, yet...lol

Thanks! I'm having fun with my "new to me" camera!
If it wasn't 619 and a 1/2 degrees outside I would go out there and try the video mode. I know it's gonna be better than the phone was!

Btw, Are those the toads that have poison on their backs ? We loose lots of dogs down here because they eat the toads and they die cause of the poison.

I know they secrete a toxin through their skin and it aggravates predators so Yes I would say so. I have had my dogs get ahold of them and they foam at the mouth Big Time! I've never seen a dog ever get past the foaming part! I did some research on if Toads were edible or not for survival situations. What I learned is there are so few that are and so many that are toxic that it is not worth the risk to try it! Bottom line I came up with is don't eat Toads    |

I may be wrong, but I think Orly has cane toads...the same ones they took to Australia to take care of some insect problem, and it didn't work and now they are taking over the country. Not the same ones in Arkansas...Bj's have a toxin, but its not leathal except in super duper high doses, they are more of the kind that will make the sick and foamy like he said.

I picked up the female toad and put her in my shirt pocket and went on my way. A but later the girl toad asked me " Hey, Aren't you gonna kiss me and turn me into your own supermodel?"
I looked into my shirt pocket and said " Nah.... I think I would rather have a talking toad!!!"
