Minus four on my way to work. Had to help run the shotgun line at the range at 2pm. Was a balmy 18 by a then. Not toooo bad if you stayed in the sunlight. Lucky, we only had 13 shooters today so it went fast.

It's SO cold here right now that I'm half tempted to put on a sweater. A freezing SEVENTY FOUR DEGREES! And I've had to shovel sunshine off the driveway twice today just so I could get the van out to go shopping. I don't know if I can take this extreme weather. I may just have to hibernate in the bedroom with the tv remote and Dominoes pizza delivery until spring. CCmama how are your DH and you? Been worried and praying and wondering. I'll post an update. Look for it here in General. Thank you so much for asking.

Just put the Bailey's directly in the Ramen noodles? Save a step. I like the way you think! I was thinking skip the noodles.............. and the baily's. Whisky is the only effective anti freeze in this crap.

Even I was considering a sweater. But I had my winter T-shirt on so I was good.

They tell us were getting a break on Sunday and it should hit between 25°F and 30°F but will be cloudy.

I think a balaclava (maybe with a watch cap under it) and clear safety glasses (or safety sunglasses) should be in your preps. A wool scarf as well. Cold can be debilitating and extended periods of being in it can surely kill you I heard just this morning on news if a person didn't wear eye protection in extreme temps, ice crystals can form and cause major damage to your eyes.

It has been many, many years, but when I was in Alaska for the original pipeline project between Fairbanks and Prudoe(1975/76) I quickly learned how cold will kill you in one big hurry. At extreme levels, bad things can happen before you've even realized your mistake. With a lot outdoor activity experience at 120F, I would much prefer to deal with extreme heat than cold. Now I'm mild southern climate wimp.Y'all be careful out there! I really would like to hear of some of the instances you're talking about.

The worst of this round is over for now.
However the north east in general was on the razors edge of grid collapse. Another few days and the brown and blackouts would have begun in earnest. Insufficient natural gas pipeline capacity, stores of coal, pipeline for heating oil, worn infrastructure, among the several AAR points.
Anyone in the line of fire for this last one, will be in the same spot for the next one. Satellite data suggest a strong potential for another blast soon. Looking further into late this year and early 2019 it only looks to get worse.
Now is the time to improve plans for this. Assume grid loss as the needed fixes cannot occur in the time remaining.
I pray I'm wrong, but I wouldn't state it if I thought I was.

Very interesting message cwi, let's hope it helps someone. Here in my area the two choices to operate our homes are natural gas and electricity. I don't understand why some people in my area opt to have a total electric home. When we experience loss of electrical power, these people can't heat/cool their homes unless they use generators to do so which is what I do also. However, I have a backups for heat which is my fireplace and my stove, even if I have to block off all the other rooms not to freeze. Plus, total electric homes have no hot water in their hot water tanks once it cools off and cannot use their stoves to cook meals. Their option is to take out the barbecue pit and hopefully remembered to fill the propane tank or bought charcoal depending on the source to use either. My hot water heater is connected to natural gas as well as my stove. So...I am allowed a nice warm bath or shower plus enjoy a hot meal. I'm not familiar with the North's options should, like you say, the power grid stands a chance of collapse. I'd like to hear from others on this topic. The worst of this round is over for now. I read an article about how cold it is and how hard it was on the power structure. The libs, dems, and greenies have all but shout down coal and have minimal uses natural gas improvements all in the name of environmentalism in order to combat global warming. Thus they are freezing their collective green asses off. If it wasn't for the 12 conservatives left in New England I'd be cheering. Oh hell, those 12 should have already packed up and move. Here's to global warming and the idiots waiting on the govt to save their ignorant asses. On the flip side I'm glad AH finall has a winter. Hope insane and mountain mark, CGU are safe and warm. -36* on My Washington. Dang.

I wish ME, NH and VT could become it's own Northern New England region. Even though things are getting more liberal with all the infiltrators from MA These states are still pretty conservative and realistic. Most of the people with power issues were in MA. The ones complaining they couldn't get fuel deliveries were people that don't have a contract with any particular company then cry when their tank is almost empty and they are at the bottom of the list for delivery.
We are on automatic delivery and I call in the spring and have them top the tank off. If we had to we could get through a winter on a full tank.
The thing I find amusing is the number of people changing over to pellet stoves that need power to work because it's more environmentally friendly. They deserve to be cold. Stupid should hurt.

Amen More people leaving their over taxed over regulated over priced liberal hell hole, moving to a more conservative locale but wanting to implement their ignorance from their previous hell hole. States should have the authority to deport assholes...I meant liberals. 😏
