Ya know, I was listening to the morning news and he said y'all have some extra wicked wintry weather on the way. Now, like us with'canes, dealing with heaping mounds of snow and blustery winds are kinda routine for y'all. However, just in case make sure you have ample supplies of the following: Thermal underwear to keep the goose bumps warm wool socks to keep boot insoles dry so toe nails don't freeze caps to keep your hair in place from the wind lots of packs of instant cocoa with mini marshmallows and a cap of your favorite whiskey, any animal would be so delighted to sip on something warm besides tasteless water popcorn, it can be buttered, caramel or just the plain Jane stuff. If you get snowed in you can start your garland for next year's Christmas tree. Please store in a covered container so it doesn't attract any critters. Word of caution, air it out before putting to use. Be kind to our feathered friends, don't feed it to them if you like hearing them sing or watching them fly around. Ramen Noodle, let me tell ya sha, this stuff be the bomb if ya hungry and the oil in the tank be running low to cook. Run the hot water of the faucet to soak 'em down. Rinse out with hot water one of those Missasip suggested fancy Ozark Trail double insulated glasses, (hope you bought one cuz they're great! Thanks Jimmy), put your soup in there and suck them noodles through a large straw one at a time. Soup lasts longer that way and by the time you get to the last noodle it should be the right consistency. And now I will wish you all to stay warm, stay safe, be blessed and we luv y'all. PS. My apologies if I forgot someone living in the wild blue yonders up north.

In true New England phrasing, It's gonna be wicked cold this week! Actual temps in the negatives at night. I put a heat lamp in the chicken coop on a timer so it will come on between 12am and 5am. It won't heat up the coop but it will take the edge off the cold. I have all the above mentioned supplies and more. I like some Baileys in my hot cocoa.

It was a balmy 16F when we finally ran a couple errands. For the past 2 nights, we were more than well-fed at a friend’s house. We’d been invited for Christmas Day supper, and when the quantity of leftovers was evident, we-all were invited back. I can use “we-all” in this instance because these folks hail from NC and cook accordingly, right down to authentic sweet-potato pie for dessert (which used to be the coin of the realm when they just needed me to play for some event. . ). B&A have invited us for years... literally since Ceorlmann began middle school (gr 6 up here). Parents were taken on a tour of the school; kids were too, but it was a separate tour. I heard some B-flats down one hallway and made a quick detour, returning about 10 minutes later with a stack of music to learn. Next day, I returned and began accompanying the chorus (my way of staying closely involved with the school, yet not so closely as to trail Ceorlmann — he was strictly on his own down in the instrumental end of the hall). That’s where I was when 9/11 happened). B&A were my intro to authentic Southern cooking. Included in the group is /ceorlmann’s very first school principal; she has recently retired but can always be counted upon to request a couple of Broadway tunes. Monday night, though, we stuck to strictly sacred Christmas music. As I type, it’s about 19F. During the day, a jacket really isn’t necessary unless it’s windy, but I have 2 in the car anyway, along with all the usual winter preps. Once Airborne retired, he brought all his various uniform items to the P.O. where he had worked (this is customary when someone retires, as the items are no longer allowed to be worn by the retiree, the only exception being the shoes & boots. I then decided he needed proper winter-wear, especially given our (soon, I hope!) destination of SD. There is usually a steady breeze out there (unlike here), so my purchases leaned toward the wind-proof or wind-resistant as well as max warmth. Returning from B&A’s last night, Airborne initiated one of his new jackets. I bundled up as well even though it really wasn’t necessary (no wind). Our beekeeper friend in Winnipeg Facetimed us about having somehow forgotten (first time ever) to renew his driver’s license (renewal due on or before Christmas Day), then discovering that his car insurance had also expired (on the same day). He had no plans to go anywhere (aside from Mass - across the street) since he’d be traveling by foot and Winnipeg had a -45F wind chill at the time. He’s not forgetful, but he is very preoccupied with a family member’s protracted battle with cancer, a battle she seems to be losing. Sometime tomorrow we will tend to Airborne’s flat tire, caused when he rounded a corner only to be surprised by a chunk of curb dislodged and lying smack in the right-hand tire track part of the road. Given the location when he hit it and the distance he drove afterwards, we’re pretty sure he’s trashed the rim, so we’ll be spending some quality time getting that situation rectified. Aside from that, we’re all set.

Hard to believe it will be even colder (how much different -30F-40F wind chill with real temps all below 0F will feel is a ?) County residents are generally hardy but even for us, this sustained POLAR EXPRESS - ok now that term fits- is unusual. Many of those who live in the mobile homes are in danger. We do not know anyone in that situation but I am reading on the 3 scanners I monitor that things are rough. We are toasty and warm and have let our friends know they could be here if their place is cold. We have to go to DB's for Christmas as DN just got home from Nashville. 1.5 hours each way in this cold. DH has battery charger in car and jumper cables, I have BOB and extra blankets and of course we have ON our winter gear which is good to -40F. But who wants to test it out? Hoping you guys will be warm. Really can't wait to get home tonight and only venture out for church on Sunday -Friday!

I know when to shut up and sit in the corner and watch. Dang, SG, that's colder than my sister in Racine. Y'all bundle up and be careful. Take care

Spent part of the winter of '78 in a pass above Rifle, CO when the windchill at the job site got to -40
When the #2 diesel in the fuel lines of the crane froze while it was running they shut the job site down and we raced a snow storm that dropped 11 more feet of snow on the west side of the Rocky Mt all the way to TX
We would stop for gas and it would catch us
Also spent one winter in MN
You can keep that up there not for me
Its bad enough for me when it gets below 30 a day or two here in SC
As long as we don't have an ice storm its fine
