I'm sure someone will figure it out. Read all the post, there are two clues...one from me and one from another poster. I'm taking off going hunting for crampballs got my stick and a bag to put them in,lol ;D

Fungus. They're used for tinder. I know them by other names but have only seen them once.

They are also called king Alfred's cake, does that help yes it is the same, my brother told me about them and showed them to me when i was a lot younger the story is that the baker mistook them for cake and fed it to the king right. |

Something like that, the king was watching them and let them burn to a nice black, so they look like little black burnt cakes but not all the time. |
