Been working on a primitive hook, one that can be made in the field. This is just a first idea and has not been tested, got to start somewhere right In the pic are honey locust spines, very sharp and tough, could they be made into a hook? So I took out my knife and pried off a few. Once home I started working on a way to fashion them into a hook and attach them to the cordage. All I did was weave the spine into the cordage and this is what I got. I also show how i attached man made hooks, just weave them right in. This is an ongoing project and have already been to youtube to get ideas. If you have an idea of your own Please chime in....thanks

Wow, that's really cool! I wish I had honey locust where I live. Black locust spines are quite a bit smaller, but maybe I could make them work.
Good job OT, let us know how it works!

There are other things that may work, like bone. You can't really make a hook out of wood, once wet it would be no good. Clam shell may also work...for small fish. Ill keep working on it....thanks for the replies

Got a question......Since most of this country has been fenced off for years and wire is readily available, why not use a few things like barb wire, staples, nails etc... also in your testing? There is almost always an available supply of these items around....sounds like cheating but it would be faster in a lot of cases and would allow for the making of stronger hooks. I love the fact you are making cordage from scratch and completely understand the desire to keep it all natural but survival is about making the best use of all resources around you and recognizing them as such..... Just food for thought....

also nails make good hooks, but i would think the satisfaction of catching a fish on something completely natural that you made yourself would be excellent

Just food for thought.... If in a survival situation I would never pass up the chance to make a hook out of anything i could find. What I am practicing is bushcraft for now, so it has to be made from what mother nature gives me. If we change the title to survivalcraft then it could cover anything, man made or natural. What do you think? It could catch on and start a whole new trend. As I wright this I am making cordage from willow that I cut earlier today. I like it so far but will have to try it out first before I compare it to nettle.
