Dink, no need to be concerned about the language. Once you start reading up on it it will make cense. If you would listen on a conversation between hams, you will understand. Sometimes we use words the same way you would when you text somebody on the phone. A lot of hams when they talk to newcomers use plain And simple language.

Marc, do you have any recommendations on where and how to buy a 'simple crystal radio' kit? I looked but I don't have a clue what is a real kit or something else.

I built one of those for a science fair project Waaaaay back in the olden day's! And believe it or not tha dang thing worked!! I'm wanting to say I got it from Radio Shack. I still remember I was thrilled when I was able to receive WBAP 820 AM Country Gold! They broadcast out of Dallas/Ft. Worth Texas and were the mainstay channel back then....might still be on, I don't know?

Wtrfwlr they most definitely are still on.. probably one of the most conservative radio channels in the USA. I remember they were a very strong broadcasting station and they definitely played country.. but mostly now I think it's talk radio. Would be interesting to build a radio though.

That was the station I was brought up listening to as a kid. I did broadcast all over the place, I remember when I was driving the race hauler cross-country I could tune it in and all the truckers would call land lines from their CB's and make requests. Some fun day's back then. You should look around about the radio, I had alot of fun putting mine together, I was maybe 10-12 years old? I didn't score very well in the science fair since the other kids had fathers that mostly worked for General Dynamics at Carswell AFB and had a WHOLE lot of input so to speak on the projects. Mine was all me since Dad was either not there or too drunk when he was. I think I still got an Honorable Mention though!

Pennsylvania Mike, hi there, is it possible for you to start an echo link "Bunker Net" up? this could be the start of it! we then could progress to many other types of comms later on, as soon as there is some sort of group coordination going on?! All the best. John

From Wiki-
A crystal radio receiver, also called a crystal set or cat's whisker receiver, is a very simple radio receiver, popular in the early days of radio. It needs no battery or power source and runs on the power received from radio waves by a long wire antenna. It gets its name from its most important component, known as a crystal detector, originally made with a piece of crystalline mineral such as galena.[1] This component is now called a diode.
Crystal radios are the simplest type of radio receiver[2] and can be handmade with a few inexpensive parts, like an antenna wire, tuning coil of copper wire, crystal detector and earphones.[3] They are distinct from ordinary radios because they are passive receivers, while other radios use a separate source of electric power such as a battery or the mains power to amplify the weak radio signal from the antenna so it is louder. Thus crystal sets produce rather weak sound and must be listened to with sensitive earphones, and can only pick up stations within a limited range.[4]

I just looked at that link, then read the crystal link it contained. I'm just as lost as ever. I bought Ham Radio for Dummies in hopes that things are finally explained at a sufficiently elementary level for me, but haven't managed to get past the intro.

Hi John, can’t do that at the moment, I have been using my computer and iPad to communicate via echo link. In order to make a network you need a VHF or UHF rig connected to the computer. Right now (every summer) I camp in Virginia for 7 months, then I go back home to Pennsylvania and I am moving very shortly so all my antennas at home are packed for the move. BTW that is one of the great things about echo link, as long as you have a ham radio license you can communicate worldwide either with a radio/computer or a computer and even an iPad or iPhone and you can’t beat that for communications. Will love to do it but at the moment can’t do the network with the computer/radio, but I can contact a network or repeater or just talk to an individual.

i think that most of us outside of the us (especially down here in aus) are gonna be SOL if it does all go pear shaped, to buy a unit that could punch across to the us is way out of most people price range, not even including a back up power source to keep it going.
the antenna unit alone would cost far to much, and i very much doubt that you could erect an antenna big enough without some sort of zoneing issue getting in the way

Mike, what do you mean you can do it through those other methods? I guess I need to learn the HAM thing, then hit you up for info on what you last posted...but that is interesting...can I use myt iphone for that?
Garret, is it possible to get a set up that could reach any place closer to you, then maybe a relay system could be set up, so if you wanted to contact, say...me for example, you could send a message and it might take a couple days...but I could respond. We would just have to find folks between here and there that would be go betweens.
Can anyone give me an estimate on how much a simple system would cost? Something that would reach out beyond the state of Missouri, preferrably...but not the highest tech most expensive stuff. Just something basic and good for getting started. A setup that would be serviceable and goood should SHTF before it could be replaced. I REALLY want to get this done before November...IF possible.
