I was able to go up to my old hunting grounds yesterday and scout around. I have hunted these woods for years but haven't done so in maybe 6 years or so. I went for a look see about 3 years ago and from the looks of things that was probably the last time anyone has been there.
The weather was fantastic though a little warm to do a whole lot if ridge running but that did not deter this fella that has been starving for some time in the woods!
When I first arrived to where I turn off the county road I have to cross some cow pasture but the gates were open so I guess he has moved his livestock at least for the time being. When I drove into the woods I hadn't gone but maybe a hundred yards and a huge Doe scampered across the road in front of the truck....good way to start out!
I'm going to say the fall colors are at their peak and were just spectacular! I was surprised that they were that brilliant since we had such an extended drought and heat wave throughout the summer.
He are some photos, I was going to try and make a little video while I was there but the batteries were running too low for that and I failed to bring any spares along with me. I really need to get some of the Lithiums and a charger.
Hope you enjoy the photos!
This is pulling in.
This pond had about a dozen Woodducks on it when I arrived.
This is the cabin a buddy and I used to use for hunting camp.
Found several fresh rubs, looks like the Bucks are still here!
Kinda hard to see but this is a fresh scrape, that is what really get's me going when it comes to Buck sign! I found several of these as well.
There are quite a few of these abandoned cabins throughout these hills, many have never been completed or occupied.
This is one that was lived in. Story has it that a woman lived here and spent her entire life living in the mountains. It is nothing but a ramshackel mess now.
This was her well.
This one is a cedar cabin that was sorta finished but never occupied. I am giving some thought to maybe using this as a camp?
In the loft.
The only thing I can figure is this was a reflector for a candle?
I guess I lied when I said this place had never been lived in!
The view out the front.
This is the spot that I picked out to make camp, that is if I decide not to stay in the cedar cabin. Nice and level, plenty of wood and fairly easy access to my stand locations.
There is even a well located right there!
Here are some of the wonderful colors of fall, I love this time of year.
