Hey guys. I have a bunch of brass and a bunch of serria matchking in .223 55gr and a bunch of IMR3031.
I used the 3031 in my 7.62 reloads with good results, though it was slow and going subsonic at around 750 yards (calculated).
I was wondering if any one has tried the 3031/.223 combo in a gas gun and what results you have seen. I think I want to crimp these as they will not be so much for accuracy/precision shooting.

With any load if you have a gas gun like a AR you need to test it and make sure it cycles consistently. I have some super accurate .223 rounds I loaded up. They shoot great out of my bolt action rifle but they won't cycle my AR.

You really need a faster powder for an AR 5.56/.223. I suspect your going to foul up fast and suffer many FTC.

The last thing I want to do is scrub gas tubes. Sierra does have data for IMR3031 for an AR15. Max load is producing 3000 FPS. But I agree, its pretty slow burning. It burns very clean in my 308 though, but there is a lot of cooling going on in the gas tube. I might load some up for kicks. Its either that or I sell the powder and find some thing better like Varget

Varget is awesome in the .223 for AR platforms. The only problems I've ever had with Varget is that it tends to "bridge" in my Dillon 550B. This bridging will cause 2/3 of the powder to come out of the charging die after you've started lowering the ram. It has happened more than once and I hate dumping powder on the floor or bench!!! I was able to fix/remedy the problem by breaking the whole powder hopper, charging bar and powder die down and do an excessive cleaning and buffing/polishing on the parts. I've given a lot of thought to the new CFR223 powder but have yet to buy any.

ahhh. I hand measure and trickle my loads so that probably wont be a problem any way. Its slow but it works.

I hand throw my loads for 30-06 and have no problem what so ever. I use a Lee Perfect Powder Measure.

You might give BLC-2 a look. It meters and flows great in 223. It is a ball powder.

I've got a good bit of a pound of H322 that is awesome!!! What it looks like is Varget that's extruded to 1/2 it's regular length. It's about as long as it is round but you can tell it's an extruded powder. This stuff in my AR is smokin' accurate too!!!!
As far as ball powders go we got a pound of Ramshot and it flowed well and was not too dirty in the bore.

Can you use IMR 4895? The reason I ask is that I have a ton of it. It works great in my 30/06.

I did some reading and it seems to cycle a carbine fine too. Might be a good way to go. I would like to have one powder for both guns, by the sounds of the 4895 would be better then what I have now.

I tried to put the IMR load data on here...but it did not format right...so...here's the link... data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp Under "Load Type" click "Rifle" Under "Cartridge" click what ever caliber you're loading...then click "Get Data". Once this comes up there will be a few more options in the box...such as "Manufacturer", "Bullet Weight" and "Powder". You can fine tune your results from there.
