What do you consider to be the most valuable fire lighting source? Things to consider are longevity, renewability and if it's user friendly. My first choice would be the firesteel and my backup a magnify glass. With these two fire methods I could last a long time without needing to resupply. Whats your choice?

The most valuable fire lighting source is a butane lighter... Yeah I agree, a good firesteel would be my first choice

I'm with you on the firesteel, Then maybe a fire piston. But I always have a bic in my pocket.

My reasoning for picking the firesteel and burning glass. The firesteel on it's own will last a long time, much longer then any one or two lighters. Plus lighters can malfunction and will run out of fuel. The burning glass will make my firesteel last a long long time.My third choice would be a bic lighter, even after the fuel runs out it's still a good spark source,if you know how to use it and have done it. Someone that has no experience using an empty bic to light fires may not be able to. I urge everyone to save your empty bic's and practice lighting fires with it. It may save your life one day.

I'm with you: firesteel first, then the fresnel lens or a variation on that theme, then EVERYTHING else.

I'm pretty partial toward my magnesium fire starter, but that's just me.

The Mg bar is just an added item to the firesteel. It's the sparks that light stuff, including the magnesium. All the Mg does is ensure burning at a high enough temperature to make less than ideal tinder work better.

I'm pretty partial toward my magnesium fire starter, but that's just me. That would work just fine because you still have the firesteel

Understood, but if I recall a firesteel doesn't have to come with the magnesium bar. I'm partial toward the ones that do because I like the Mg "insurance."

Still the mag bar by it'self is not a fire source. Come to think about it a firesteel is also worthless without the striker

Under most conditions short of TEOTWAWKI...a regular old BIC lighter.

My edc is just a ferro rod that I carry in the same sheath as my leathermen wave. I know for a fact that with all the practice i do, this is plenty. now when I go on my outings I carry a firesteel, flint and steel, burning glass, bic lighter and toy caps. I also carry charcloth, candle stubs, jute twine, ceder shaving, pine pitch, and fatwood
