Lawdog, I'm interested in that metal tool looking item resting on top of the lid. I'd like to look it up, it looks very useful.

There sure are a lot of great ideas on that link. I only use my tin can for keeping the char cloth but thinking of doing a first aide tin. Anyways, here is my tin with the char cloth part of my fire kit. It contains: Wetfire Fire Starter Packets Oval Pads Dipped in wax Water Proof Matches Stike Anywhere Matches rolled on paper towels & dipped in wax Bic Lighter with Ducktape Mini-Bic Firesteel with Magnicium rod & scraper Cotton Balls Altoids Tin with Charcloth & twine

Thanks orly you just made my day. Terrific kit, I especially like the waxed match firestarters. I'm gonna make me some of those.

I did the same matches but I spread some petroleum jelly on the paper before I rolled it and dipped it in wax.....give you a hotter and bigger flame. Do the experiment for giggles

Survival kits from altoid tins, just not big enough trust me.I did however make a nice fire kit from an altoid tin. For a fire kit it's just the right size but falls far short in my opinion as a survival kit [a href="h ttp://"]link[/a]

And that is where I carry my all important firesteel extra tinder a bic lighter, fatwood, flashlight, leatherwave and more cotton. I think the survival altoid kit is a great idea for an overnighter. But if you find yourself doing a second or third night with just this little tin...not good. I would rather go to the sporting goods section and buy one of those flip top tackle boxes that have a lid on the top and the bottom. This is just my opinion and for some you may be happy with the altoid tin survival kit... i'm good with that

I just completed one yesterday, thought it would be fun. I was shocked just how much would NOT fit in the can. Still a nice little kit to have, off the top of my head I have: -First aid supplies -Fishing supplies (line, hooks, sinkers, eyelet screws) -Knife blade -Para Cord -Compass -Light -Matches -Razor Blade -Sewing needles -Dental Floss -Lighter -Hemp Cord -Electrical tape -Rubber Bands Probably a couple other small things I forgot it's a start and a darn good one. Not to be a kill joy but once you take this kit out and really use it you will see that it's just not big enough. I would suggest a poncho and a firesteel plus where are the tea bags or chicken bouillon cubes. A better kit would be a metal cup that could be used for heating water for tea or just plain drinking water. The steel cup should hold a little more items for your kit. Just having a cup to heat water or tea, makes a big difference in a long cold night.

Lawdog, I'm interested in that metal tool looking item resting on top of the lid. I'd like to look it up, it looks very useful. First, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. My computer has been down. Anyway, the tool you are referring to is called a "survival tool". It is multi-purpose, which is why I like it. It is listed with 11 uses: 1. Can opener 2. Knife edge 3. Srewdriver 4. Ruler 5. Cap opener 6. 4 position wrench (for various size nuts & bolt heads) 7. Butterfly wrench 8. Saw blade 9. Direction ancillary indication 10. 2 position wrench 11. Lanyard hole (key ring hole) It's stainless steel but, I really do have it as a backup. It was, to say the least, dirt cheap! I think it was a dollar (if not free). Kinda neat though and I like it, so I'll keep it in my edc!
