I love to fish, I love the sitting around and contemplating life. The issue is that I have only gone fishing a handful of times and I have zero gear for it. My daughter also loves to fish and I would like to get her somethings for christmas along with my younger son.
What would be some good all around fishing lures/baits/etc to pick up. I walked into Cabelas and was overwhelmed. I don't know what anything is for. Does anyone have the time to give me a down and dirty on lures to pick up. It would be in missouri that I would be fishing. Thanks ahead of time.

I follow what this school teaches.... youtu.be/je2hgExZ5woHe doesn't talk about bait, but it's pretty much food scraps or insects/worms on a hook. You could go without the Yo-Yo, just using a throw line or stick rod, but I keep 3 Yo-Yos in my BOB as a force multiplier. I can be off doing other things and still catching fish at the same time. Worth the extra weight IMHO.

I keep it simple in my BOB. Some 12lb string (that's what i had), about a dozen small let split shots, (8) #8 wire hooks, and a couple of small foam bobbers. I also put in a couple of tube jigs (my fav are the blue/white and black/chartreuse). For bait, just about anything will work.
I can entertain myself and nephew with a can of whole kernal corn for bream for a whole weekend.
I also have a couple of yo-yo's in my bag, but that would only be used if i were going to set up a camp for a while.

Survival fishing and pleasure fishing are completly different IMO. Survival I am going to use YoYo's limb lines jug lines poles, trot lines traps nets etc.
I like YOYO's in my gear because they can be used for fishing, snaring, tripwire, etc.
I have small light weight gill nets, and you can make a trap from a 2 liter bottle. During SHTF minnows become food and guts, heads and tails become bait.
For bait use what the fish where you are are already eating, other fish, fish parts, things you see floating, bugs under rocks. Lures are all about color and movement. Pick ones that will sparkel in the sun or move like an injured fish. I have luck using a small piece of jewlery or some links from a small braclet. Also anything that crates a scent trail in the water like the corn, or blood, or WD40, yep I said WD40 spray it on your bait to create a scent trail.
In a survival situation I would rig a net bag with fish guts or other animal parts you didn't want to eat yet and let the flies get to it. In a manner of days maggots will form. Hang the bag over the water and let the maggots fall in, the fish will come to them. The little fish will come to the maggots and the big fish will come to the little ones. Under this situation the fish will bite a bare hook, or you can use a net, a small electrical charge or a plant posionous to fish like black walnut hulls.
Also remember a small fish and a large fish can both be hooked on a smaller hook but only a large fish can be caught on a large hook. In a survival situation you are after volume not record breakers.

I'm a little confused here. Do you wanna know what to get for maybe you and your kids (what are their ages?) or do you wanna put together an emergency fishing kit? There's a big difference in the two. If you want to have a fun day on the river bank or lake shore some fishing rods with reels and a little tackle box would be the ticket. If you're looking at a survival fishing kit it would be a bare bones, just the necessities, lightweight kit.

Well, do to lack of knowledge on the subject I thought there would be some carry over. I am looking at both. I went to cabelas and looked around but there was tons and tons of equipment and lures and rods and reels and this and that. I eventually said screw it, I don't know 100% what I am even after so I left. Heck walmart overwhelmed me as I have no idea what I am looking at or looking for. I have almost zero knowledge in this area. I took the tact of I will just get a little of everything, but then put it all back as I wasn't sure if I needed any/all of what I had. I am looking at getting each of the kids a small tackle box along with some kind of rod/reel combo. I am not 100% on what I would need/want for the tackle and if I could kill two birds with one stone I thought why not. I figured a rod is a rod, and a reel is a reel, and as I will not be doing any prize fishing or the sort I figured whatever it is that I buy will punch the ticket. What size hooks, what test line, what would be the best lures,etc... is kind of what i was looking for a little guidance. Duckman, my daughter is 4 going on 14 and son is 2 going on 2 1/2
