There was a time when I took great joy in a good fist fight. Especially in the days of drinking when the pain didn't hit until the next morning.
This was especially true prior to realizing I was indeed mortal after doing something extremely foolish that lead me to stop drinking.
Since cessation of drinking in 96, I've noted a not so subtle change over the years. More and more it became about win at any cost, rather than risk losing with honor.
This was first noticed overseas. In the last decade, it's been noted to be more and more prevalent here. When someone wins, if there is a win, it's not good enough anymore. Now it's about causing harm with extreme prejudice. It's about marking the person on the losing end, breaking their arm, busting out their teeth, or worse.
That is not where it ends either. It isn't good enough to just take your arse whooping like a man anymore, if that even happens anywhere anymore.
Now it's about getting back at the person at all cost, including taking their life.
This is manifested in society as a whole everywhere. Knockout games, MMA, gangbanging, road rage killings, etc.
Being a rather large guy with certain areas of my body that are numb to pain due to a scrambled nervous system, I have never had a problem holding my own in an unarmed fight. I've taken a couple of good beat downs, and given many of them. Now I avoid them like the plague.
In this day and age, it's not about fist, but rather it's about tire irons, knives, guns and anything else they can grab to wound or kill you, with the stronger likelihood of the latter. Not everyone is like that, but the majority certainly are. So much so that it must be assumed that they are, rather than given the benefit of the doubt.
My attitude has evolved from fighting at the drop of a hat. It's now if it isn't worth killing for, it's not worth fighting for. Sounds extreme, but that is the way it has to be. It must be assumed that your opponent will resort to mortal tactics if they find themselves on the losing end, and possibly even if they are on the winning end. Once they resort to mortal/deadly tactics, you 'will' be forced into the position of killing or being killed.
Do not physically confront someone if you are not willing to kill that person. That sadly, is the society we live in.
