Anybody, please feel free to add your thoughts to any of the items listed or if you have other ideas of any gear usage or modifications you've made to it please post it. This is a great exercise for multiple gear usage whether to make your back pack lighter or if you for some reason just have a few items or maybe something you find in your possession which would enable you survive. Next item: 2" candle

In my lace up hiking boots I put a small slice in the tongue and inserted a small fire steel and handcuff key, resealed with clear waterproof glue, I also replaced the laces with paracord.
In my Zippo lighter I added a small fire steel cut to size lays beside the cotton packing, I also replaced the roriginal fuel packing with regular cotton balls, that way if I do run out of fuel I can remove the packing for sparking with either the Zippo itself or the fire steel.
Also wrapped the lower 1" of the ligher with duct tape, added a ranger band around the cover hinge area to prolong the fuel, and added 2 extra flints to the fuel area under the flap.

Okay we have a total of 4 people who responded to this informative thread. Many times I hear members mention they like having multi-use items as gear. Just post one of those and tell us how you'd use it. Think of fishing kit items, fire kit items, first aid kit items, sewing kit items, put together repair kits, binoculars, cooking utensils, duct tape, candles, glue sticks, aluminum foil, paracord, a shotgun shell, an empty water bottle, garbage bags, Ziploc bags, tarps, knives, flashlights, the list goes on. It doesn't have to be a long list, we can brainstorm together to add to it and learn from each other. It might even be a method of doing things that you like using such as cooking or mending things. Just get those gears in motion and think.

Signaling device 5. use the wax to water proof matches 6. better heat source in confined space then you think 7. check co2 lvl etc... (lower ahead in a well if cleaning out) 8. use wax to seal small containers 9. use as heat source to seal plastic containers (juice bags etc..) 10. use wax shaving for fire starter 11. use for a delayed fuse for distraction fire 12. use as a tamper seal for person letters etc... 13.cauterize a small wound 14. sterilize needle etc... to pick out something 15. seal off the end of nylon rope etc... 16. melt two ends of nylon (para cord ) together to make longer lengths 17. burn your mark on leather etc... 18. use wax to seal a small puncture wound 19. use wax to create a temporary water proof wound dressing over a bandaged 20. use wick as a water wick to pull moisture into a container

How about an old school wool blanket like the military kind..... A good one, as those blankets are still readily found in a lot of places.

Wool blanket: 1. As a blanket (duh) 2. Substitute for a drying towel 3. Rolled like a jelly roll, then formed into a torus, makes a dandy containment for a small child who cannot yet crawl well 4. Splint padding, especially for folks with long legs (that leaves me out ) 5. Stretcher bed when affixed to some suitable poles 6. Folded, makes a decent pillow 7. Sleeping bag liner 8. Can help winterize a hammock when used beneath the sleeper 9. Can cover an animal's eyes when you need to subdue the critter (e.g. an injured dog) 10. Privacy screen 11. Breeze diffuser when strung up as a tarp would be 12. Substitute parachute for children's parachute game 13. Substitute collecting bag 14. Substitute scarf for several people 15. Substitute (warm) poncho 16. For folks not allergic to wool, can be cut and pinned/sewed into substitute long johns 17. Hunting blind 18. Butt cushion 19. Spread out as a small play area for young kids 20. Rolled into a bolster pillow for more comfy sleep either in a hammock or on a hill

Wool Blanket
1. Make a bed roll and include items in a kit like a contractor bag, Ziploc bags, an extra change of clothes, etc. Wrap it closed with paracord like a pork loin, make a strap to carry on your shoulder and if you have to ditch your backpack you still have very useful items to survive. :
2. Make a hooded poncho or coat
3. Cut into strips to make a strong rope to climb or repel
4. cut small square to make slingshot pocket
5. make snow goggles
6. put cuttings in wet shoes or boots to prevent hyperthermia
7. make socks
8. find two long strong branches, roll sides of blanket tightly on them, fasten them with paracord and you have an emergency cot to carry someone.
9. make shirt or pants
10.make a sling for an injured arm
11.cut narrow strips tied together to make a fishing line
12.make a rifle strap
13.wrap a hot rock or other heated item to make a heating pad
14.make a warm cap with earmuffs
15.keep bottled water warm so it doesn't freeze
16.pile leaves or tree boughs on it to drag to finish your debris hut instead of making several trips
17.same with firewood
18.make bandages if that's all you have
19.make a washcloth or towel, you gotta stay clean
20.cut strips can be used to bind many things together
