first Garand I've ever had. got it in the mail from the CMP about 3 weeks ago and haven't had a chance to go shoot it yet.
the instructions say that you have to disassemble it and have it inspected by a gunsmith.
that seems excessive to me....anyone have any tips about this little factoid?

I don't know anything about Garands but if it's used and you are not all that familiar with guns it would be a good idea to have someone give it a once over for you. There is not all that much to take apart. It is probably more of a disclaimer for them more than anything else.
How does it look? I know you have been working on getting this rifle for a good while now. You happy with it?

Missj, I would have to agree with wtrflr....I would most definately have it checked out by a gunsmith specially if is used. You don't want that thing causing any injuries to you. Let us know how you like it when you fire a few rounds down range.

Cmp will ship you a firearm but they don't service them beforehand anymore that I am aware of.

Gotta ask Miss J, did you go for the upgraded one? Either way, can u post a pic or two? Would love to see it. Congrats on your purchase, Ive always wanted one of those.

Good for you. Glad you got one of them. Look it over and see if the numbers match. Most of them are put together out of de-milled rifles and don't match, but usually are ok if the the head space is ok. You can always do the old tie it to a used tire and run a string over behind cover and torch off a few rounds then check the brass for splits or blown primers. I did have one that the roller on the bolt broke off, cause it was a arsenal reweld. Most of them just keep shooting for ever and ever. Enjoy.  |

just dropped it off at the gunsmith yesterday. I took some pictures but now i can't find them. I'll snap some more pics when I get it back in a couple of days. The gunsmith charges $40 for the inspection and cleaning...I figure it is worth the peace of mind...

just got the phone all today- she is all ready to go and nothing was needed beyond an inspection!
(yes, my Garand is a SHE)
I couldn't believe it took 2 full weeks to get her back. Good thing I allowed time, because I have a hot date with a retired cop on friday to help me sight in my rifle...ha ha ha ;D
anyways, I'll probably pick her up tomorrow or thursday and snap a few pics to add to the thread....

Pics will be nice...have you "friend" take a couple pics of you putting her to the test!!
I had one when I was married...like MY 37 others of our collection, she disappeared while I was at work one night and he was moving out. Loved that there gun!
